Believe it or not the TPMS system is not law in Canada. My wife's Hyundai came without it, we had the sensors priced out for her winter tires and then the sales guy comes out of the shop halfway during the install to kindly tell us we don't need the sensor. No light after the install .

My friends Ram 1500 displays all 4 pressures on a screen. It will probably break next year like most Chrysler stuff.

I use my tpms a little differently. Normally run 33#. I run all 4 tires up to 38# and hit the reset button under the steering column. Then reset tires to my normal 33#.
Since system works on 25% loss, if a tire drops to 28.5, the dash lights up. I want to know if a tire is low earlier. If I set it to 33, a tire has to drop to 24.75 before the tpms lights up.

Problem is that the sensors don't last forever and they're expensive.
Our 07 Rav4 has had the light on for a couple years now.
When it first came on and it was obvious that it was a bad sensor, we had our garage replace the bad one. Cost over $100.

A few months later, the light came on again. About that time I read somewhere that the sensors typically last 7-8 years.
Don't really feel like shelling out the bucks to replace them all, so we live with the light.

My boss's '06 does. I think that may be the year Toyota started putting it in the Tacoma. Federal mandate was 2008 as far as I know.

Totally hypothetical...but maybe if I got a newer Tacoma?

If you wheel your truck you will ditch the tpms sensors. They will leave you with a flat... Solid non flexible stem makes no sense.. Had me be changed out after two flats in one weekend........

The TPMS in the Taco is retarded. AT least my Vette's TPMS tells me what wheel has the issue and what the pressure is. All my Taco does is light up and leaves me to guess which tire it is. Oh and whenever the air temp drops below 50, the light turns on. I see the benefit of it letting you know to pull over before you trash a tire but its still a PITA.

That (bolded) is normal for all TPMS systems, air changes volume with temperature.
Just a few weeks ago we had a cold front come through and we had over 20 vehicles come to the shop because of the TPMS light being illuminated.

More nanny state bullshit- if you want them great, get them as an option, but like reverse cameras, they shouldn't be mandated. I'm glad my '05 doesn't have them.

    I'm very serious.

For Toyota, they don't have to spin. There was a member here that bought new rims, but his existing OEM TPMS sensor wouldn't fit the new rims. Instead of dealing with an illuminated light, he sealed all 4 sensors in a schedule 40 PVC pipe, tapped in a schreader valve and pressurized the pipe.

.... No more TPMS light and the pipe capsule stayed nestled in the back seat storage area. :)

When Toyota included the spare with a TPMS, how would that work with the tire not spinning?

I know that's not the case for the tacoma, he was talking about his 2011 GTI.
Ford vehicles are the same as the tacoma, very simple to deal with.

    Lot's of stuff (-;
The main reason I did away with the sensor was so I could run lower pressures in the rear than in the front. I also run 36" tires so 35psi is ridicules.

The bad is after taking in my tires to do a wheel swap the local tire shop said they wouldn't bolt them on without the sensors....... They sold me the 1700.00 in tires plus custom wheels to boot!! Now they want me to buy new sensors?? Thank you Les Schwab Tire Center

The older Toyota's used the indirect sensing also. They worked off the ABS sensors on each wheel. They had to be spinning...

I'd take the Czech version of the system. I guess the US military designers never figured out how to keep the air from leaking back through the system. Either that, or the troops like the extra hour of sleep while the tires re-inflate.
