    Badass truck.

Why the difference in ratios front and rear?

Thanks! And great question. The stock toyota rear axle can only be geared as deep as 5.29. The d44 gear sets don't come in 5.29. 5.38 is the closest it comes. According to Randy's ring and pinion, a difference of 1% is acceptable. The thought is that the difference is negligible given the lack of traction on surfaces where we typically use 4 wheel drive. The difference is similar to a 1/4 inch difference in tire size from front to back which can occur "naturally" with tire wear on big tires. There has been talk that one might even run 2 or 3 pounds of air difference from front to rear to help offset the difference in gearing.

Someone needs a great start to a truggy!

    Makes total sense.
Never even thought of having different psi to offset that too.

There can be up to a 10% difference in the front and rear gearing and you should still be fine.

I would love to know what credible source this came from! I can assure you that is well outside what is "generally accepted" by the experts at places such as Randy's Ring and Pinion and ECGS. If you have evidence that suggests otherwise, please share it. Otherwise I would ask that you change that post so that it doesn't get spread as gospel or found by someone searching who might not know better and make a costly mistake.

*edit* That would be the equivalent of running a set of 3.73's in one axle and 4.11's in another. Definitely not something I would recommend. If you would like to discuss the math, feel free to shoot me a PM and thanks for the bump! Cheers!

Almost certain I read that all over pirate, also I would say most of the guys running 5.29s/5.38s are on truggies, not daily drivers. I will see if I can find some links.

I think the confusion is in the math. The percentage difference is found by dividing rather than subtracting. In other words 5.38 \ 5.29 = 1.017 - 1 = 1.7% difference. The DD vs truggy/buggy thing doesn't have any bearing on the situation because in 2wd, the transfer case disconnects the front and rear. When in 4 wheel drive, a 10% difference would cause binding in the transfer case as well as the ring and pinion and u-joints and would quickly lead to catastrophic failure on and surface with more traction than ice. Hope this clarifies things.

To potential buyers...there are TONS of examples of folks running this gearing setup with absolutely no issues at all. This is perfectly acceptable and has been proven and verified time and again.

I've been running mismatched gears (5.38s and 5.43s) for years. Never had an issue. But, I don't think I'd ever run a 10% gear ratio difference... 1-2% at the most, especially DD.

Free Bump, how about some close up shots of your welding? Ultimately when buying a truck like this it'd be ideal to see the quality of the work that was performed.
