Thank you so much for showing this to me! I think the magnets would be a great idea. I'm going to suggest this to Shane and see if we can't make this happen. It would allow me to easily take it out at night and solve this problem.

P.S. The other video is pretty sweet too. He did a very good job on that, and he used a full size iPad; pretty awesome.

Hmm seems like a lot of variables. If was making a quick run in the truck I wouldnt be happy without music

It is a lot of variables - that's precisely why I need a of varied data :D I completely agree about the music; that's why I'm so determined to figure this out. I also like having the option of using navigation. You don't plan to need these things.

I do know that when it gets cold, I'll let the truck warm up one way or another - either by remote start, or me sitting in it. This method should warm up the iPad. I know that the iPad startup procedure is not that long, so I wouldn't miss out on too much music; there is always the radio anyways.

Why does it have to be a new $600 apple product in your truck? Why not get an inexpensive droid tablet that's a couple years old off of eBay? Use that in your truck? Then you can use the costly ipad inside?

Speaking of droid, one benefit is you get choices between many different manufacturers. I wonder if there is a tablet that's made to military specs?

The easy answer: the dash kit is made for an iPad mini. I'm not sure if another tablet would fit. Why $600 - the newest, largest model. I plan to put a lot of maps on it for off-road use, and want to have the space.

Military specs would be cool, but in my experience, that would probably make it inferior to what available in the private sector lol. Think of the reliability of any military vehicle vs. a Tacoma...

You suggestion is completely logical; but I do like spending money on my truck!

I like that! Some people spend $30k on a motorcycle or $80k on a motorhome. No justification needed.

By the way, thank you for what you do. In my book, you are a real life hero every time you train in those conditions and by volunteering to be ready to do more. I know that guys like you make it possible for me to be free to not have to worry. It's very very very much appreciated!

Thanks! It helps that I live well below my means, and am single, without children.

You are most welcome. I appreciate you taking the time to express it. Be sure to pass those feelings on to young soldiers (lower enlisted) you meet in person. They do all of the grunt work and accomplish our nation's missions. We wouldn't be where we are without these young men volunteering to selflessly serve.

Hunter we are in similar positions. i just ordered a kit from Shane as well. It will go with a 128 gig iPad Mini 3 with Cellular. While my truck isnt in the extremes yours is in AK, mine spends many winter nights in VT parked outside cold soaking overnight. As well as hot summer days in NJ. in VT it can dip to -5F to -10F... in jersey the cabin temp can prob climb to 120 while parked, maybe more...

in a perfect world we could power it off, or just slide it out easy to take it with us. but it seems that in order to pull it, we need to pull the dash trim panel. (which isnt that big a deal it just pulls off with friction fit)

it sounds like you have a remote starter. I have one as well. I think this will def help bring the cabin up to temp before we drive the car and have the ipad in an environment well within its operating spec to use/operate.

but i suspect on a hot day, or super cold night it will prob power itself down and shut off. necessitating us having to pull the trim, and power it back up.

I sure wouldn't let it sit in -40F/C overnight. (I love that temp... it's the same in F or C...lol)

Seriously, the Liquid in the LCD will freeze. Most manufacturers say to allow the LCD to warm up for 24 hrs before using. Otherwise you run the risk of internal condensation and that will damage the electronics.

If it were me, I'd get a Garmin for mapping , and a Sirrius XM and wait till you are transferred out of that freezer of a State... Or pony up for a heated garage... Or leave the truck running, or a serious block heater, or a space heater...

    Hey,

The temperatures have actually been really mild - in the +20's to +30's F. I added the "+" because it's usually 20 or 30 below this time of year.

So far I have taken the iPad out at night, but I leave it in the truck when I'm around town for a couple of hours. Apple recommends the "operating" temperature be above 32F, but I haven't always powered it down, and it's been fine. Perhaps it's core temperature doesn't drop below 32F in a couple of hours (think temperature gradient of 65F in the cab when driving, to 25F outside) though. I'm not sure.

I'm getting a lot better at putting it in, and taking it out when needed, but I'm looking forward to that not being a necessity during the summer.
