HID FAQ

So I purchased a set of HID lights from DDM tuning. My original intent in purchasing the kit was to decrease current draw from the headlights and to achieve a nice light blue color. After reading through everything in this thread it's clear that it's not a very good idea to put HID kits in stock housings. I'm looking for the light blue HiD look. What is a good alternative to HIDs if you're keeping the halogen housing?

 

GOOD? Nada

Blue irritates the eye and sucks in rain, snow, or dust

 

Not looking for blue. Looking for the equivalent of 6000 temperature. Pro dominantly white but slightly blue.

 

Silver stars or zxe

 

Silverstars are great but won't last a year. I've been through so many sets over the years. I ended up switching to Sylvania, I think. They are not as good but I've yet to replace them in 18 months so far.

I drive 40K miles per year which may explain the difference.

I've been learning alot about HID lately thanks to you guys and so many great links. I'm also trolling the latest group buy for an HID retrofit.

I must say though that after reading page after page of ranting and nattering against putting HIDs in stock housings, I'm bewildered that the number one sticky under the 'Lighting' forum is an HID conversion kit for stock housings

 

Not sure this has been asked yet, but quite a few pages to read through. I just installed Kensun 8000k HID's on my 2012 tacoma and I am getting a flicker from the passenger side light. It seems as if it's only when I decelerate, and when I start to accelerate it goes back solid. Doesn't do it all the time, but enough to annoy the hell out of me.. Anyone have any ideas on why this is happening?

 

If you had read even the OP, you will understand that everyone here will tell you to get those bulbs out and put the stock ones back in.

And then do a proper retrofit with 4300k or 5000k bulbs. Or if you really want that blue, 6000k, max.

 

Complete fail. I'm on a public service campaign to let people know there is a superior engineering solution that will out perform HIDs without the complications, while maintaining the correct beam pattern optics and cost less.

Can't seem to cut a brake. Bought these off another member, they've worked fine until now. How in the hell do I get to the HID to replace it? And can you buy only one? Sorry for my stupidness.

Are you running projectors? Because that glare...

But to answer your question, the HID bulb is just like any other bulb for install. However HIDs ballasts can also fail causing your bulb not to ignite. Swap your bulbs or ballasts right to left, to see if the same bulb remains out (bulb failure) or changes (ballast failure). Your going to need replacement bulb or ballasts.

also replace bulbs in pairs.
hids colorshift over time and if you run 1 new and 1 old bulb of the same Kelvin, they may appear different color/intensity than the other.

 

will installing HID's on my regular stock headlights or foglights mess anything up?

 

what model truck?

if ur a 1st or 2nd gen and dont have a proper projector retrofit, you will "mess up" everyones vision on the road with scatter.

 

that is what i am worried about, i have a 2nd gen and i have the stock smoked headlights

 

your housings are engineered to control the light from a filament, which is NOTHING like the HID arc
