front pipe gasket help

I uave a 1996 tacoma 2.7 liter and i kept hearing a ticking nose so i put the two front pipe pipe gaskets on and it stoped for a few then it would tick rite when i crank it then stop then it has gotten back to normal and im talking about all of 4 days...i put new gaskets in anf tighten all 3 bolts equally until they were all tight i dont kniw what else to do can someone help me please so i can get this tickin to stop......thank u

 

exhaust pipe..? the "front" gasket that connects exhaust to header? specify, please.

 

I would look over the exhaust manifold, especially between the 2nd and 3rd cylinders, and look for cracks. Pretty common on our early 2.7s.

 

I poured a ton of cheap gaskets down my two 2.7s until I finally sprung for the OEM gaskets. Haven't had a problem since.

I've also had the manifold crack, though, so definitely check it. If you replace it, do yourself a favor and upgrade to the mini-header so it doesn't crack again. I had one that I replaced with another manifold and the new one cracked within a couple of months.

Its an OEM part...go through the stealer or salvage yard...with that said I ordered mine through a fella on yota tech. Think his user name was death cougar. Was still from the dealer though(think he worked there) but it was a "kit" so everything was there, no chasing little things down.

$402 17141-75080 Exhaust Manifold

17141-75080. It will say it's only for 2001+, but it fits any 1st gen Tacoma with 3rz.

You will also need two donut gaskets:

$17 90917-06061 Exhaust Pipe Gasket

90917-06061

And one new manifold gasket: 17173-75020

And probably a new gasket for where the EGR comes into the header: 25634-75010

 

Yea it is were the front pipe connects to the bottom of manifold how much arevthe shortyvheaders and does it help with power and alll..and what does 3rz mean

 

thanks, I didn't even think about the egr

from the looks of it, this header is tubed steel but doesn't appear designed to flow any better then the stock cast manifold so im guessing engine performance wont change and is going to be about the same thing with the cast manifold.

but after reading posts of people having replaced with another cast manifold which cracks after a few years (one poor guy had 3 new cast manifolds crack on him in 10 years) I can see where spending more money for this one is a much smarter way to go

 

will this work on a 1999 2.4L 2RZFE engine as well? im assuming it will but would really rather know for sure before ordering one.

3rz is the model number of the 2.7 liter motor that was in all the 1st gen Tacomas with 2.7.

I didn't notice any more power with the mini header, but I definitely noticed that I don't have to worry about ever replacing the manifold again. If there's an exhaust leak, I can automatically rule out the manifold. After having 2 of the manifolds break in one year on my last truck, I never want to own one with the manifold in it again.

 

one thing I did notice that is different about the tubular header is that the heat shield mounting points from the cast manifold have several smaller ones plus the two larger ones, so while the cast heat shield may bolt on by the two big ones, it wont fit right because its shaped different and those other mounting points aren't there to keep it from vibrating and maybe cracking or rattling so I will be trying to find the part number for the correct heat shield for it or maybe leave it off altogether but I like to put things back they way they should be if I can.

 

I left the heat shield off. It's been about 14 months with no problems.

 

I think its just there to keep the heat from drying out and eventually cracking the air intake tube over time but if it can be replaced its put on there for a reason so why not keep it even though I don't think not having it would cause any problems drying out nearby plastics until 10-15 years later
