Long bed vs short bed?

    Your right, that DCSB sports car of yours is way faster and nimble then my DCLB. I mean seriously, 13.2" longer and 50lbs is a huge difference. ;)

    Having owned BOTH....You would be surprised how much of a difference that 13.2" makes. Love my DCSB.

    For overlanding, get an access cab. Then you'll have the longer bed and the shorter wheelbase. And no one wants to ride in your back seats for hours at a time getting jostled and motion sick. :anonymous:

    You'll go overlanding with small kids exactly ONCE in your life. Trust me on this.

    Since my kids are grown, I opted for the Access cab, which only comes with the long bed, but is the same overall length as a DCSB. I figured I was buying a truck because of the bed, not a hardly used second row of seats. So, long bed convenience with short bed turning radius.

    Op says looking for an overland rig. No advantage with the long bed, unless it comes with a high clearance rear bumper. Tougher to navigate that extra foot. No additional payload capacity. Double cab with back seats dropped has a half a cubic yard of climate controlled storage. Access cab not so much.
    I'm assuming the FJ has a shorter wheelbase for tight trails?

    The DCLB does have a slightly less break over and departure angle, but not by much.

    Approach/Break Over/Departure

    Access Cab 35/26/24
    DCLB 35/25/20

    I assume that the tow package would decrease departure angle. Not sure though.

    IMO Long beds NEED to be lifted with little bit bigger tires. Thats when they look their best..

    When their stock their just to low and long looking, but I still love em!

    Short bed is fine for me. I'm not hauling stuff around and the slightly shorter wheelbase and better turning radius is nice when off-roading.

    After thinking about it. The most compelling reason for a DCSB is ATRAC that comes with the Off-Road AT, short bed only.

    There is more difference between the trucks than just the 6' bed. The wheelbase on the long bed is longer and that increases the turning radius. The short bed is much easier to drive and park. Unless you really need a 6' bed I'd stick with the 5' bed. I've had a 5' bed for 5 years and have never had anything I couldn't get in it.
