sooo, long story short i traded my favorite baby in the world aka my built fj80 for a tacoma to save on gas as i now have a 45 mile commute each day, i traded last night for a 1999 trd. test drove it last night, ran like a top. drove around for round thirty minutes highway everything was good no codes, pulled hard.
that brings us to today, this morning i went to start it fired right up tried to drive off and it was just bogging down. literally couldnt go anywhere, after it came to operating temp it was running fine, i was leaving denver to drive back up to breckenridge, stopped, filled up with gas, got back on highway and a CEL came on. immediately following that, the motor wouldnt go above 2300 rpm, period. just bogs down and does nothing, kinda surges but nothing. i turned around went back to my house grabbed my scanner and it threw the following codes:

    p0171, p0100, p0110

my first thought was plugs and wires but these lead me to believe it may be maf or ias.

also i should note that it has a K&N intake for some reason....

regardless all of my tools are about an hour away (diesel mechanic by trade)

    suggestions???

I'm gonna go ahead and jump to conclusions and say whoever sold you it knew what was wrong with it.

Clean the MAF. Maybe the previous owner recently cleaned the air filter and over oiled it. Which is very common with K&N air filters.

I second that thought. Get hold of the guy and sweet talk him to save you the diagnostics and cut right to the fix. Careful to not put him on the defensive or he won't tell you shit.

yeah i texted him and he said that its happened before with after the K&N install. now hes not answering, now that we all agree hes a degenerate, what should my first course of action be? i was thinking pull maf and clean it and if that doesnt do the trick i'm gonna hit all the pick and pulls around here and find a factory intake on monday. will a 4runner one fit as well? maybe clean throttle body while ill im in there.... anyone ever experience any symptoms like this?

yep, I agree. call him back and ask him whats wrong with it so you don't have to figure it out and you can just go buy what you need. he shouldn't mind telling you since the truck is yours now and you cant undo the sale so why shouldn't he tell you. (assuming he even knows himself)

assuming he is no help start by testing the MAF sensor and check under the truck if the cat is glowing red signaling its plugged up, that will kill a lot of power as well as throw multiple codes

for now clear the codes by pulling the EFI fuse out for 15-30 minutes, im told that resets the ECM

my first thought if it has a k&n filter is the goober over oiled it and now all the sensors are gunked up and need cleaning, throw that k&n in the garbage and put a better filter or stock filter on it that will keep your engine clean

when i first texted him and subsequently called him he said it has happened before but only after the k&n was installed. all calls since have been ignored. i already cleared the codes with my scanner.

yep clean the MAF sensor and throttle body, that's all you need. the intake is pointless to replace as it has nothing to do with it, the other sensors are all in the throttle body (TPS & IAS).

hopefully he didn't ruin the MAF sensor by using carb cleaner on it which I suspect is what this goober might have done

I would also check to see if the IAC Valve is dirty. If he did over oil the filter it may have clogged it up and that may be disrupting the proper air/ fuel mixture. Also sounds like it may be starving for gas? Fuel pump? Fuel filter?

I don't know what engine is in your 99' but a VERY similar issue happened to me with regard to buying a tacoma and 50 miles later.....

Here's my thread if it is of any help. A little different issue on mine but it has everything that I checked.

I suggest you relocate the fuel filter like I did here: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/1s...diy-2-4l-2-7l-fuel-filter-relocation-mod.html

it makes changing it again in the future so much easier after

Check the MAF wiring as well and check the pins in the connector. You'd be surprised what people do when they have no clue about anything mechanical. If the guy got a ton of oil in the sensor then that could be causing this like others have mentioned. I'd spend time looking at the wiring though. The odd thing here is that you have an IAT and MAF error code. Those are two individually wired sensors in a common MAF housing according to the diagram I'm looking at. So it's a bit strange. That would lead me to looking at the connector and the harness back to the ECM. I've had two vehicles that suffered MAF issues. Both threw a bunch of codes, including lean codes just like yours. I did not get an IAT code though on either vehicle.

Does your scanner show any live data from the ECM? Such as the Intake Air Temperature or Grams/Sec for airflow? Just curious if you're getting any readings.

GR-R and BR-W wires are for the MAF
W-R goes to the EFI Relay
Y-G and BR-B wires are for the IAT

This is for a 99 with the V6. It looks like the 2.7L has the same wiring.

Pull back wiring on the MAF into the harness. I had an open circuit which caused my idle to be crap and caused the truck to limit the RPMs. I retaped the wires and wrapped them back up haven't had the problem since.

is your engine the 6 or the 4?

So now we get this info after I studied the shit out of that video and instructions.

Who would buy a 4 banger anyway?
