What do you want to know? I run a 2m/70cm Dual band Yaesu with an NMO mounted antenna on the roof

I know jack shit about them. Need a recommendation on an antenna...and where to put it. Will be paired with a Kenwood TM-281A.
Anything else I need besides the unit and antenna? Also is there any tuning or anything with the antenna like there is with a CB or is it just plug it in and forget it? Thanks!

Best performance is in the middle of the roof, because of the ground plane. This is usually more crucial for 1/4 wave antennas.

For 2M (what radio you're getting), you only need a single band antenna tuned for 2M, so you have lots of options. Since you're in the mountains a lot, a 1/4 wave will do you well, since the radiation pattern is isotropic (same gain in all directions, theoretically). The other sizes like 1/2 and 5/8 squash the pattern towards the horizon, which is better covering long, flat distances but gives up high angle radiation. Realistically either would work fine but the 1/4 wave has the benefit of being much shorter (19" vs 51.5") and puts less stress on the roof and mount.

    http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/hamantm/larsenm.html

Check out the NMOQ B for a great 2M 1/4 wave whip. You'll need to buy the NMO mount separately.

I used to run my CB whip on the roof which is 53" long and never had any issues with the strength of the mount or roof, but it smacks a lot of things on the trail and prevents you from driving in to parking garages. It worked amazingly well - far better than the Firestiks I've used. But the reality of the matter is that most CB setups are janky and even if I have a strong signal out, it doesn't matter because I can't hear the poorly set up radios call back. So now I just run a 3 or 4 foot firestik on the front bumper and never have to take it off to fit in parking garages.

HAM is awesome though. The audio quality is extremely clear (think FM broadcast radio vs AM), and the range is great, even simplex. I think you'll love it once you get it going.

GREAT info. Thank you. I'd prefer as short of an antenna as possible due to low hanging branches up here. Ideally I'd like to run it off the rear of my bedcage like I did my CB so I can run it 100% of the time, but I understand the ground plane problems. A roof mount won't allow me to park in my garage without removing it.

Can always count on you for yet another useless reply for those who have genuine questions in our local thread!
If you must know, I'm signed up for a technician course December 6th. Regardless, I'm not even going to be on Ham frequencies, I got asked to chase so I'll be on race radio frequencies.
I also always stay on the trail, tread lightly, only carry in states I'm permitted to, and shake twice after every piss. :luvya:

I call it like I see it.
I'm not doing anything wrong, nor did I allude to it. I certainly don't need a nanny from someone who pretends to perch on some moral self-righteous high ground when I'm just asking a question. I guess I'll just wait for ForeSkinner to ask a question about shocks, tires, or hell...anything about a vehicle and I'll reply with "Have your driver's license?"
