Diesel Taco. Iraq?

Im stationed in Iraq and there are beat tacos all over base used as work trucks. They have the diesels in them and i was wondering if anybody back home has any experience with them. They seem like they would b fun if you could get one back home...

 

Those the ones with the foam-filled tires? Those tires are good for scrambling your guts on a bumpy road (like those in Iraq). No matter what we did to them they never broke. But I preferred my humvee.

i am curious about the diesel tacoma. there is an outfit in colorado that will do a new engine with wiring harness for $5000. there are a lot of them outside the us. why not here?

 

They are great IMO, but hard to aquire. Military guys may be able to buy a "beater", then swap the motor back in the US into a Tacoma, 4 runner, etc. Those 4 cyl Toyota Diesels are "forever", if there is one. Here is an outfit out of Texas that will do it for you, but for serious $$$

The americans wouldnt want to bring a diesel toyota into the states, ford, chevy and the rest of the american crap would be screwed.

 

Blame it on the EPA.

During The Bad Old Days I enjoyed a turbo-diesel/5-speed HJ-65 Land Cruiser in Germany. When purchased in '88, I could import it without restriction. When it was time to come home during early '90, EPA had changed the diesel rules and I had to sell my baby in Germany at a stiff loss.

Diesel emissions standards are much tougher now. The only hope lies in newer, direct-injection techniques, pioneered by VW and slowly being adopted by other makers.

Don't hold your breath in the US market. Many nice trucks are available in Canada that Toyota simply doesn't think we'd be willing to buy.

 

I saw some diesel Hilux's in Belize over the summer. They looked very different from the Taco's I know and love.
