Hello folks, I just joined this forum last week and lurked as I've been looking at buying a taco. The one I'd had my eye on sold before I pulled the trigger, so I've widened my search.

I found a Certified Used '06 TRD Off Road Access Cab V6 with 45k miles on it for $20k. It's exactly the truck I want for a fine price. The problem is that the Carfax shows that it was in a wreck in 2007 that ended with most of the back end being replaced, as well as the front bumper, both quarter panels, both front wheels, and a bunch of glass and small bodywork stuff.

My question is, how nervous would you guys be about buying a truck that had been wrecked, but then certified as a used vehicle? How should that figure into the price?

    Thanks,
    Sam

Myself personally would be very nervous. 20k is a lot of money and the accident factor is pretty scary. I know people who got 09's in the low 20k's brand new. If it was me I would pass.

Do you know if it's salvage title? If so, keep in mind that if you do buy it and you end up crashing it again later, your insurance company may only pay $.50 on the dollar. Some companies won't even insure a salvage vehicle.

I would keep on searching. That is a LOT of damage, especially for a 20k sale price on a 06 that has 45k under it.

Def. keep looking. Like Capita said, you can find some '09s for just over 20k if you look hard enough. Good luck!

Is this a Toyota Certified truck? I didn't think they'd Certify anything that didn't have a 100% CarFax?

It is certified, and has a clean title, and had one owner. It was just in this apparently pretty nasty wreck. It looks and drives nice, but paying blue book (20.5k) seems unreasonable. My question is how much would you guys estimate the truck depreciates (devalues?) because of a history like that.

    Thanks

Sounds like it was rolled...if its all new, what the hell go for it if all the lines on the doors, hood, etc are straight. i've wrecked some cars and trucks, replace the parts under insurance and its been fine. Offer'em 4k less...start super low.

    You forgot kitchen sink.

Buying a car for that price with a bad accident is like knowing that your daughter isn't a virgin anymore. The price already sucks even if it didn't have an accident. For 20k you can get a real nice truck. Wake up mister...wake up! :smack:

They can price it that high because finding a used one is very hard. They really dont have to negotiate because they know you will be back.

I bought my 06 for $16K last year. It is an TRD access cab off road. I would have passed if it had what your potential truck has. That is a lot of money.

I'm with everyone else. I wouldn't touch a wrecked vehicle especially one damaged that extensively.

    Definately keep looking....

A long time ago, I saw a TV show about wrecked vehicles that were fixed and dealers were turning around and selling them as 'new' or otherwise perfect condition vehicles.

So - I'd be VERY AFRAID of something they're not telling you.....could bite you in the ass later!!

GOOD JOB having a carfax check!! Best thing you could do to protect yourself.

    Point taken, guys.

Found a comparable vehicle (in black, rather than the speedway blue I was looking at. too flashy for me anyway) with fewer miles and a spotless history for the same price in Salt Lake City. What do you guys think about buying a used vehicle without being able to see it first. Apparently the Certified Used deal isn't much of a guarantee, but I could have a local mechanic check it out before I agree to purchase and take delivery.
