2015 manual transmission question

    I've put 2800 miles on my new 2015 TRD OR since I picked it up 2 weeks ago.

    I searched thoroughly, and only found one thread with mention of this issue.

    Overall I love the truck.

    The issue / question I have is that when driving along in gear, especially at highway speeds, if I let off the gas and coast and then get back on the gas, there is a thunk / jerk in the transmission. No weird noise, etc., it is just that the re-application of power causes a jerk, and it is very difficult to smoothly get back on the gas.

    Normal?

    Is your truck 4x4?

    My 08 does the same thing, but it's possible to avoid it, just have to roll back into the power smoothly.

    The issue is just the general slack in the drivetrain (made worse if you have a 4x4 with transfer case). I've come to accept it, though it does get annoying from time to time.

    It is possible to avoid, but it takes a definite effort to do so.

    So far that's the only part of the driving experience that I don't like.

    Interestingly, it does not do it when the cruise control is on; I drove hundreds of miles last week up and down hills with cruise on, and never noticed it at all.

    It's been my experience as well with a 2013. I'm coming from a 2004 STI which had fairly tight bushings and engine mounts all around. In comparison the truck is sloppy and I just attribute it to the mounts and bushings, probably nothing more than just play all around that gets taken up when you get back on the power quickly.

    OP, it won't happen with the cruise on because cruise never fully drops throttle, like ever. Even if you're 'coasting' downhill I don't think it ever lets off throttle completely and lets the car engine brake.

    My '14 4x4 does it.

    I've owned my truck for a year + two days and 20,000 miles and I rarely get the clunk now as my habits have adapted for it and for me it doesn't take much effort to avoid after owning it for a while.

    I chalk it up to it not being a sports car and lower tolerances of a drive train designed in 2005 when manufacturing techniques were a bit less precise then they are now.

    6112s and 5160 , Dakars , Superbumps x4 , u-bolt flip , All Pro Skids (hacked and raised) , 265/70R17 KO2s, SEMA wheels, couple of machined things here and there
    15' OR 4x4 here with the 6spd.

    Mine does it too and I agree with the others; general slack in the drivetrain.

    My two cents, My 06 woth 101,000 on it does it as well. The key to no clunk is a smooth foot when re applying the throttle.

    Mines does it when I am not smooth on the throttle as well!! I have had my truck almost 3weeks now and have gotten used to it.. Very rarely will I get the clunk now!

    Thanks for the input, guys - appreciate it. I'll have to pay more attention when getting back on the gas. Glad to know it is normal.

    I drove my old '96 4Runner home from work today and tried hard to reproduce this (it's a 5 speed) ... it will do it, but not anywhere near as much as the Tacoma.

    You'll get over it. Also, you haven't mastered avoiding it until you can engage / use your Cruise Control without it happening.

    It has no torque converter it is direct coupling so you are going to get a clunk it's normal pretty much with every standard trans the rear wheel drive makes it worse but still it's normal.
