I have a pioneer in dash and it does alright when cold but when it's below zero it goes really slow and sometimes the touch screen and buttons won't work. I'm sure the battery in the iPad will freeze after awhile and maybe the screen I'm not certain because I don't own one but I do own a iphone and when it's cold it's pretty much useless

I'd second that. My pioneer double din is the same way. Works when warmed up but when it's -20 below it barely functions. But my old single din alpine did the same.

We take them out of our airplanes. The cold is no good.

The battery should be fine in Fairbanks. It is lithium not lead acid.

Maybe if you can live with a non-responsive unit until the truck warms up?

I can live with non-responsive. My drive to work is 45min - 1 hr in the winter, depending on road conditions, and the truck generally heats up in 20 mins or so. What I can't live with is permanent damage to the iPad...

Any reason you want an iPad and not a double din (or similar)?

I already have a double din - Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH. I was unhappy with it as soon as I installed it, and realized that current technology in other areas far surpasses it's capabilities for my interests. I should admit up front that I am not a big audio-video guy; I don't care too much about music quality - as long as it is not obviously distorted, I'm fine. I think my unit spends a lot of money being great in this department, I just have no appreciation for it.

Reason why I'm making the switch:
    1. I can frequently upgrade the software as better versions / products become available (iOS9, StreetPilot, etc...). I could use a MicroSD card to update my current system, but honestly that was a big enough barrier for me to never do it - it always worked good enough.
    2. I will be able to easily upgrade hardware pieces of the system - a new iPad, new GPS receiver, new radio, etc. for a fraction of the cost of a new head unit + install.
    3. Apps. This is really the biggest one. Apps like Topo Maps, Gaia GPS, DashCommand, etc. are not available on units like mine, and if something similar is offered, it really can't compare in style or functionality.
    4. Apps will continue to be developed, and this the capabilities of my system will grow with time, instead of staying stagnant, eventually becoming antiquated and outdated.
    5. If I ever get around to it, I will be able to develop my own Apps for my truck.

Not sure if your into jail breaking apple products but there tweaks and apps that will take pictures from your camera and send gps coordinates if you forget/leave the iPad in your vehicle and it gets stolen to help you get it back

Interesting. I've never jail broke an apple product, could be something to look into. I'm not too worried about the iPad being stolen. They'd have to break into the truck to get it. Fairbanks is really "low crime" for that sort of thing; I've had an unsecured axe and shovel in my bed for over a year now, and they've never been touched. My truck spends 95% of it's time in a marked parking spot on Fort Wainwright and at my dry cabin in the mountains - low risk level. I also have excellent insurance if it were to occur.
