    Update from dealership:

So they had spent all day yesterday trying to diagnose the problem and when I called them a few minutes before close they said they would have to keep it tomorrow (today) to continue checking things and trying to figure it out. Well I got a call after lunch today from the lady who works the service counter saying my truck is fixed and it's ready whenever I want to come get it. She said they did the TSB 0044-14 Spark Knock Noise where they had to reprogram the ECM. I have no idea what this is, so I'm going to google it further, but it is for Tacoma's 2012-14 1GR-FE (V6 engines) engines that may exhibit spark knock (detonation) during light acceleration and/or uphill. Not sure what a spark knock noise sounds like, but mine sounded like a sort of metallic "tick" or "flutter" when I would accelerate at certain rpm's mainly around 1500-2500. I haven't gone pick it up yet, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that all is good and I don't hear it again (but we know how that usually goes).

Are you sure it is a 'tick' and not 'pinging' caused by using 87 octane and putting load on the engine in low RPM's?

What is the difference between a tick and a ping lol? I'm not too mechanical savvy, so I'm confused. When the technician rode with me the other day so he could hear it, he said it sounded like an "engine tick." Mine didn't sound like a rough rattle/knock. Mine was a constant light metallic "flutter" sound only during acceleration at certain times (not always, but more often than not when accelerating), then it would stop when I'd let off the pedal. It wouldn't do it in park when I would press on the gas either.

At first I thought it was a rock or something between the heat shield and catalytic converter, bc it was more of a metallic sound but when I removed the only pebble I found it was still doing it which then caused me to seek further assistance from Toyota.

Something else to note. I read in another forum that if you drive with a light foot and take it easy on a daily basis, that the ECM "learns" the way you drive and adjusts, then after a while when you accelerate and give it gas (more throttle and heavier foot) it will cause this "pinging" bc the ECM is use to you driving easy normally. Don't know if that makes much since, but it seems logical I guess.

2006 V-6, random tick. I run Mobil 1 and Plus gas. It doesn't tick that much to break a sweat. It's just another gremlin in Tacoma's.

Yes BIG improvement than it was prior to TSB! As of now, no more metallic flutter sound when accelerating, improved shifting, and I find the truck just runs smoother now. Keeping my fingers crossed that the noise doesn't come back and the problem is solved.

Oh and mine wasn't a "tick" that everyone keeps saying, my noise was best described as a light metallic flutter sound only when accelerating. When I would let off the gas it would stop, then as soon as I pressed on the gas and increased the rpms it would start making the noise again.

Mine never sound like a sudden rattle like marbles being shaken in a can. It was only like a piece of metal lightly scraping or fluttering on something. No hard knock/rattle.

13 trd off road here. Same noise when accelerating at lower rpm's. If i give it some gas and accelerate quicker it goes away. Dont think its anything to worry about just more of a nuisance i would guess. Has a slight ticking when idling as well which is apparently "normal". Since a lot of people have this issue and no truck has just stopped running im sure its nothing serious to worry about. Mobil 1 5W-30 and OEM filter, shell 87 gas.

so ive been messing around with this for a month now. i have probabllly tried 10+ different gas stations for gas that would decrease this "spark knock" which is so ugly sounding.

    1. Shell 93, no ping. no noise.
    2. Mobil 93, almost no noise, noticeable if you really listen
    3. Sunoco 93, alot quiter than normal but noise still somewhat noticeable.

I cant run any 87 octane without lots of low end knock, its embarrasing to take off from lights.

I run 89 octane in mine and the fuel mileage seems a bit better and the knocking is gone.
