Ordered a tiny little flash (guide number of 20) today. I'm going to try some street portraits with off camera flash when I get it :D

I've gone out twice with my LumoPro lp180 and a mini softbox on it, but the fact that it was bigger than my camera made it no fun for me and made a lot of subjects wonder what I was doing haha.

Also ordered my first light meter. I've been shooting full manual and just guessing the first few frames until it's dialed in, but I decided it was time.

Winter has hit. I don't know how much I will be able to get out and shoot anymore. I'm depressed already... ha

After quite the hiatus from shooting, I was able to find the motivation to hunt for shots this weekend. Joshua tree is really an amazing place to shoot, but I would have liked at least SOME cloud cover or stars to add some sky drama. Comments much appreciated!

With all the talk about mirrorless, I thought you guys might be interested in something I ran across today. A free guide on "moving to mirrorless". I haven't read through it but plan to.

As someone who went from DSLR to Olympus EM1 Mirrorless and happily back to full frame Canon DSLR, I can say I will stay with my heavy Canon glass as long as I can carry it. There's no substitute for the big guns (yet) when it comes to both high functioning autofocus and low light performance.

Nice pictures Peter. I can't figure out what's going on in the pic that looks like a water droplet upside down? Also, i'm starting to see your point of view on mirrorless the more I research and compare the advantages for me.

Thanks for the link Ian, checking it out.

It's a 4" crystal ball, then the photo is inverted. It's an interesting way to capture a scene. Still messing with it.

You should download and read the article. It talks about the Sony series with plenty of examples in low light and using Canon/Nikon lenses with adapters (not the best solution).

There's a definite commitment to going mirrorless and the system you choose should be made as carefully as you would a DSLR. And it's definitely worth looking into. Especially when you see notable photographers shooting with them. Like Zack Arias, Trey Ratcliff, David Hobby, an numerous others.

And Like Zack has pointed out before, it's better to choose the right tool for the job. So maybe the big body is good.

You went from a micro four thirds sensor to a FF sensor though.

The Fuji X-T1 outdoes the 5D II and is only a hair behind the 5D III.

The Sony A7s outdoes them both for low light and the A7R outdoes all of them on resolution.

DSLR's still have a AF advantage when it comes to tracking quickly moving subjects (except against the Sony a6000 which is a beast at that), but they definitely do not out resolve or do better in low light. I'd take a Fuji or Sony over a Canon anyway for lowlight and IQ, personally.

AF is the only gap, and that gap is closing ha everyone needs to be honest with themselves and find the right tool for the right job.

Mirrorless is not better than DSLR and vice versa. Different tools. But technology gets smaller. That doesn't make it worse ha I'd rather have a flat screen TV than the old box we used to have from the 80s.

I liked this. I've seen this done more often with dew drops and your take is on a different level-very cool!

Good looking photos man! Not bad at all for just starting out. I have a Sony A6000 mirrorless as well.

Looks, great, man! Welcome to another addictive and expensive hobby haha

Only thing I would critique for you as a beginner is not going so heavy on the vignette. Good eye

I like your idea of using a crystal ball! I usually just use a spare lens, but yours give a much wider area!
