6 month time out. I have a zero tolerance for any disrespect towards our past, or current military.

Playing devil's advocate here: isn't a large part of the sacrifice so tools like him can be tools w/o the fear of persecution of various forms? Not saying I support what he has to say but I know a LOT of good people who gave up their lives so that he can. It's a big part of what makes this country great even if you don't agree with the message.

I think that the freedom of speech gives that idiot the right to say what he wants without government prosecution but not necessarily without consequence.
I think the same, or similar freedoms allow the owners/operators of this website to operate it in a manner they see fit.

Moderator discretion...my discretion is that won't be tolerated. Same applies to emergency personnel.

It's a very interesting idea to ponder; however internet forums are not a democracy.

Our government was designed to be of the people, for the people and BY the people. This means our government IS our people and it's important that we not lose sight of that VERY important designation. There is no separate class despite decades of horrible classification laws trying to create the opposite. Freedom of speech is just that so long as it doesn't physically harm anyone else and the person making a statement is free to make it w/o you having to agree with it. 6mos banishment for speaking your mind on a topic seems awfully harsh. It's not my decision to make though (thank god) so it's easier for me to play armchair quarterback on the situation.

Now, the line is clearly drawn in the fact that this forum isn't a Republic or a Democracy but the ideals should still remain for the most part. They are welcome to do whatever they want but I would simply point out the irony of banning someone for speaking their mind on Veteran's Day.

Like I said, devil's advocate. I don't have to support what the dude is saying to support his ability to say it.

I'm not saying he's got 1st Amendment protection. I'm saying that the very people he's talking about died (often at the hands of tyrannical leaders who would also quell statements of opinion such as this) so he would have the chance to speak his mind... whatever the platform. The fact that you banned him for a year puts those he's talking bad about on a platform most wouldn't want to be on.

I understand what you're saying Jer I just feel like the point Sean is trying to make is that there is a large majority of people on here who are offended and upset by that type of comment and while he has a right to say whatever he chooses without legal repurcussions a ban is a lot better than anything I would have done had he told me the same face to face. I feel like the actions taken are suitable as a chastisement without any other form of action taken.

Banning a tool from one website (privately owned entity) that doesn't tolerate anti military sentiment in an attempt to maintain the flow of the privately owned entity site is not persecution. Just as any other privately owned entity, they have the right to refuse service to anyone.

The fact that people are starting to think that bring banned from one of the millions of websites available on a world wide basis is persecution, that's more of a concern to me than actually being banned for voicing anti military sentiment, same goes for political talk.

I guess I disagree with the actions taken, especially now that it's a full year. The guy's statements weren't even that inflammatory unless I'm missing something. It wasn't like he was saying that all soldiers were baby killers and deserved to die a horrible death. He was questioning the motives of the article posted and those that would defend it is how I took it. I didn't click the link to read what was in the OP of that thread so maybe if I did I would be more angered and seeing his post would assign more weight to it but I didn't so I just read his post for what he said. On the surface it was disagreeable sure but I didn't see it as harsh enough to warrant that sort of punishment.

I mean, if this guy is a douche of the highest order and had it coming anyway ok but all I know of him was that one simple post. I mean, what if someone posts a picture of a chick in a bikini which is spelled out in the guidelines of the site... do they get six months or a year? It just seems harsh for speaking one's mind is all I'm saying here.

    "per·se·cu·tion
    ˌpərsəˈkyo͞oSH(ə)n/
    noun
hostility and ill-treatment, especially because of race or political or religious beliefs."

While it is a word that can describe abhorrent atrocities it can also be used to describe what one sees as mistreatment based on actions. It's proper use of the term by definition.
