Several fields like that for enlisted and officers.
It is the military's way of saying if you want to go higher, you are going to have to accept different missions and responsibilities and BTW, you ain't gettin' no younger either.

In other words, put down your piece, pick up your pen.
    Your next aircraft/tank/ship is a desk. :D

Friend of ours (Mustang Marine) explained his long career, "After a few years in I noticed the recruits sure look young. After a few more years in I noticed the sergeants and lieutenants sure look young. Another decade and the Majors looked younger. Then one day I realized everyone in the room was younger than me and I put in my package."

^^True. I started my career as a boiler technician. About 5 years in, they were not making ships with boilers any more.

While I worked security, I saw all the MA's promoting, so I switched. I promoted to E-6, E-7, and E-8 early. You gotta be smart if you're going to make it a career.

Nice but the back and forth editing with his wife got annoying.

    On another note.
This pisses me off. First off I'm not military. Thank you to those who have served and is serving. Was in the pool store grabbing some supplies. Guy in front of me is paying and the clerk said if you are military you can get a discount. So the guy hesitated and was like Uhhh yeah I'm military. I was like sure you are. Clerk asked him what branch and guy replies what's that? Are you kidding me? I knew he was fake. He paused and was like I'm military police. Couldn't produce ID. I should have called him out on it but hesitated. Clerk gave him discount anyways.

I was in the field ~30+ years ago with a grizzled Marine WO4. Guy seen action in WW2/Korea/Nam, the bit.

End of the day, he'd shuck his boots and put on a pair of comfy slippers.
The Captain was joshing him about it a little.

The WO was unruffled. He said something stuck with me all my life.

"Being uncomfortable don't make you tough. It just makes you uncomfortable."

Fella at work today showed up in Navy dress whites with commander steps on his shoulders. Nope.

I'm not in the military or have been but know to give due respect. This wasn't and it's not like August 25th is Halloween.
