I can't remember... I know at one point I had to use a pretty hefty allen wrench for something, but don't remember what for.

Nope. Had to swap mine out for a 98 4Runner ECU. The dif fill is a 10" allen hex key, is that what you're talking about?

I don't think he's referring to the diff plug. Although speaking of that, mine was pretty much stuck in place. Taking out the CV's and removing the diff pretty much dumped all the diff fluid on the floor. What a mess...

Ah yes... and smelly too. Sorry Chris I would check (don't remember) but it's like -1 degree with snow right now. Whatever you do make sure you loosen an axle too.

Oh ok. It just hit me that the 96 ECU doesn't like boost and I couldn't remember if you swapped your's yet.
Yeah, it looks like the rear bolt needs an allen key. And yeah, I plan to drain my fluid first ;)
:jellydance: Why you on TW?! Go out and put your truck sideways :p

Will your drain plug come out? I ended up stripping the allen bolt on mine.

Lol yeah man for sure. I never drove the truck turboed with the proper ECU so I'm not sure if it would work or not.
I heard a small percentage of 96s didn't mind boost

The first time I changed fluid I couldnt get my fill plug out. I used some compressed air to freeze (the whole can) it and it came out pretty easy.
Your 98 should work just fine with boost I would think :notsure:. If you get an AEM, make sure you have the right manual for the pin readout on your ECU.

Say what??? I used a monster crescent wrench and It came off like it was meant to be off lol. Maybe you can drill a hole in that stripped bolt and tap it to 1/4" NPT and re-plug it. That is if you absolutely can't remove it.
Sounds like you haven't changed the fluids out in a while no?

Its not uncommon for the front drain plug to be stripped (http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/1st-gen-tacomas/344220-stripped-front-diff-drain-plug-2.html)

Im not sure why Toyota uses the allen bolt.

I meant I never drove it turboed with the stock ECU. The 98 ECU loves the boost believe me :D. The pins should be the same... if not Im sure I would have seen something go seriously wrong by now.

Haha! Not sure yet man. I jacked my truck up this passed weekend to swap the oil pans (just finished the oil return). I need to cut down the IC tubes then its just a matter of bolting on.

Yeah, why Toyota makes that fill plug an allen is beyond me. They should have just made it a regular hex head bolt like the rest.

As soon as CX gets the damn thing back in stock I'm ordering the manifolds & downpipe. I've decided to get them ceramic coated, and then I'm going to wrap them to keep as much heat out of the engine bay as I can. I'm getting anxious to finally get my 4Runner turbo'd. I went backpacking last weekend with a couple of buddies from college, and to get there we traveled some mountainous highway, and it just reminded me of how lacking in power the 5vzfe is. I wound up just locking out overdrive to keep the damn thing from downshifting so much, lol.

Careful, the material doesn't handle heat very well and will crack if you wrap and coat it. Its generally advised to keep stainless manifolds uncoated.

Yeah I definetely wouldn't do that. Wrap the snail up in a blanket but I wouldn't recommend anything else.
