Where are you working/ what're you doing with your degree? I just ask because there's such a wide variety of jobs for engineering and I haven't decided where I want to go with it yet lol

Just don't be an electrical engineer unless you don't mind me proofreading your plans and calling you a dumbass. Electrical engineers should be required to work in the field for a said amount of hours before getting their titles.

It seems to be the do anything degree.

Job titles I've had:
-Manufacturing Engineer
Facility that made body parts for mining & construction equipment as well as ROPS for backhoes, UTVs, & tractors. I did things like troubleshoot facility issues or quality concerns, program the robotic welders and laser cutters, design fixtures/tools, run time studies to optimize workflow through the facility, make suggestions to customers to optimize their products to reduce scrap (therefore reduce our cost and theirs), improve strength/safety without affecting cost, etc.

- Process Development Engineer
A medical company making products mainly for pelvic floor reconstruction but I also had a random project for a prostate cancer treatment. I'd be on a team with product engineers telling them why their product ideas were impossible to build in the real world. I'd come up with processing methods and design custom tools, fixtures, etc and run parts through a pilot manufacturing area to find weak spots in product designs.

- R&D Engineer (aka Product Development Eng)
A medical company making implants and tools for spine surgery. I'm technically in a "sustaining" role meaning I support existing products to address questions on manufacturing, quality, etc. Most of the time I'm making minor tweaks to designs and writing all the documentation to justify it for the regulatory agencies. Occasionally I step in to help on projects developing new products. I also help write/revise some of our standards regulating materials & processes. There are a lot of random things I do for helping stay compliant with various global regulatory agencies like writing technical justifications, clarifying document content for non-technical people, giving "expert" opinions, and so on.

Some friends with ME degrees have jobs like "technology assessment" for a hospital system (makes sure the equipment they buy really is cutting edge and actually does what it is supposed to) and another went on to law school to be a patent attorney (big money).

yeah, for mechanical/manufacturing, guys on the shop floor always loved that I'd come out for their opinions on what was realistic versus the theoretic perfection the computers showed. I had near legend status even because I was the engineer that would actually get dirty and wasn't afraid to operate the equipment myself to figure out what was going on when there was a problem.

No one should be allowed to design a product until they've had to run a mill, welder, press, lathe, or whatever to make their own parts. It gives you a whole new appreciation for dimensional tolerances.

One company I interviewed with back in Atlanta actually required all engineering new hires, regardless of their experience, to work in the machine shop for at least a year before they could even request to officially move to the engineering department.
