Has anyone done this mod? Ive seen some on 2nd gens but no 1st gens. The map lights come on a long with the dome light and you can also use them independently.

Yes, I have. I added a 4runner dual map light, then ran a wire back to the dome and tied into its power. Also put SMD led panels in them all.

    Works awesome.

I've looked at 4runner map lights, and they didn't seem to mount the same, different bolt pattern.

Does the taco map light have that ability? Where on the 4runner setup did you connect too? Thanks

You could even use the map lights from 90-95 4runner, that's what I did. I hooked mine up to my dome light.

I used map lights from an 01 in my 99. The ones with 3 switches between the left and right lights. While they have a bigger footprint than the no light mirror they bolt right up. They needed the "hot all the time" and the "switched from the door" wires extended and fished from the regular dome light, took 15 mins.
Be aware that there are some diodes in the base of the fixture. I found this out bench testing the thing with jumper wires. "Pop", Radio Shack to the rescue.
They will work in any potential combination, on with dome, on with door no dome, one side only and any other combo.
The extra holes are there under the headliner on all 1st gens.

To mount the 4runner side by side map light you need to cut the headliner to accept the wider 4runner light. Even on trucks with no factory map light the mounting nuts will be the same and the 4 runner light will bolt right up. The light is grounded to its body, and only needs a single power wire to be extended back to the factory dome light.

Dumb question here, but where does one need to pry to get that cover off, without destroying it?

Where did you get that dome light and how did you hook it up?

You got me curious since it's not been off for almost 14 years.
The little U shaped piece that surrounds the mirror stem comes off 1st. Pry the legs forward up near the headliner. Then repeat with the 2 forward edges of the main cover. When they release the cover will rock backwards off the switches. The main cover has 4 catches that can be seen in the pic below.

It all came back to me. My 99 v6 SR5 TRD Manual "Oak" interior, originally had the single light version so the "hot all the time" wire was there and only the "switched from doors" wire needed to be fished from the rear dome light. The single light unit used the 2 inner mount bolts (phillips head) and the headliner had to be cut to expose the outer mount points. The lights ground to the body thru the mount bolts and yes that's red stage gel with little rectangular cut outs. This allows a subdued overall effect with "spot" task lighting.

On my trucks the piece that surrounds the mirror do sent need to come off separately it stays on the cover. Just grab the front of the cover (closest to the windshield) and just pull down and back. They come off with almost no pressure at all.

I just pulled the cover off of mine to show you guys that the damn bolt pattern on mine is different afterall

I just looked at a relative's '98 Tacoma with the map lights, and the bolt pattern is just like 'dirtypool' .
However, I wonder if I pulled back the headliner on mine, maybe I'd find 2 more un-used threaded holes?

I have done this swap to my Taco (from a 4runner in a PnP). I could not find any additional threaded holes or an electrical lead, but 2 of the holes lined up, and that was enough. Different color, though. Eventually, I'll have to look for one that matches my interior. I just ran a hot wire from the dome light.

What did you have to do to run that hot wire? Did you have to pull down the liner?

It was a little tricky. I think I used a piece of straightened wire coat hangar, to 'fish' a length of wire through, between the liner and the metal roof. Only needed one power wire, since the ground of the new 'personal lights' is thru the mounting bolts. I didn't bother with trying to make the lights come on with the door opening. I didn't really need that.
