Retrofit Halo Wiring

Hey guys I'm going to be installing my new retrofit headlights with halos tomorrow and am curious how everyone was wiring these? I'd like for the halos to come on with my factory DRLs, but not blink with the turn signals. Any ideas?

 

Here is one way you could do this:

Get an automotive relay that has the following terminals: 30, 85, 86, 87 and 87a. This is a SPDT Single Pole Double Throw relay.

Connect it like this:

85 (coil) to ground
86 (coil) to +12v from the headlight circuit (or parking light circuit)
30 (common) to a fuse connected to +12v source switched with the ignition
87a (n.c. contact) connected to the +12v side of your halos
Ground to the -12v side of your halos

The way this works is: When the ignition switch is on, +12v power goes through the common terminal of the relay (30) to the normally closed contact (87a), and lights up your halos as long as the headlights are off. When you turn the headlights on, this sends +12v to the relay coil (86) which is also connected to ground (85). This causes the normally closed contact (87a) to open the circuit to the halos and turns them off.

Awesome info man thanks! Another question though, would it be possible to keep the halos on with the headlight on? Just connect 86 to another wire for the trigger?

 

I was wondering about this. I thought you wanted the halos to function as DTRLs that are only on when the truck is running but the lights are off.

If you want the halos on when the truck is running but still be able to turn them on and off, you could simply power them with a switch that would get power from an ignition circuit. You probably don't need a relay would because they don't draw very much current. You could get a switch that fits in one of the blanks on the dash. depending on what options you have there may be a blank right beside your fog light switch. By using power from a circuit that only has power when the ignition is on, you don't have to worry about leaving the switch in the on position and having the halos drain your battery down.

If you do use a relay, you can run power to the switch , then to terminal 86. Use Terminal 87 (normally open contact) instead of 87a (normally closed contact) so the halos are on when the switch is on. In any case make sure you protect your wires with a fuse.

 

I had considered doing it that way if I couldn't figure out how to control them with the lighting stalk. I'd really like the control of the halos to remain with the stalk so it's more of factory feel. I've heard that it may be possible to tap into the DRL wire before it goes into the blinker box but I've yet to have this confirmed.

 

I get home tomorrow so I'll be able to take a closer look at the wiring. I may just connect to the ignition temporarily while I figure out the other.

 

Could just tap into the parking/corner lights directly or through a relay

 

Dont want to do this because I want the halos to be on during the day like my DRLs. If I tap into the DRLs they act as turn signals too.

 

Ohhh, I see. Possibly there is fuse slot you can tap and run to the relay that is always hot when ignition is turned on? if your ignition is on, so are your dtrls, right?

 

What gauge wire do most people use for wiring up halos? I am wanting to wire mine to a switch in the cab so I can turn them on whenever.

 

Since they don't draw much power, you could use just about any size wire. However, it is probably a good idea to use at least 18 gauge or larger simply because it is stronger and won't break if you yank on it.

Also, the DRL's on my 07' aren't the lights that go with the turn signal.

 

Calico since you have the '14, you can tap the parking light wires. I plan to have my halos completely separate and on switch with my demon eye light, if anyone could help with that, PLan to get an ottraw switch and use my blue sea fuse box.

 

Seems like the appropriate thread here so I'll give is a shot.
My halos turn on while the car is turned off. (key out, car locked). Sometimes I catch the halos on when I walk the dog or do something outside. It's random. Sometimes it stays on for minutes and other times hours I assume when I don't catch it. My current remedy is to pull the fuse and put it back in. Anyone ever had any issues at all with this? Could this be a fuse issue or grounding issue?

I'd say double check what fuse your tapped into.

 

I have. Everything is snug and tight. Still turns on randomly. Caught it tonight on when the car was off for over 3 hours. What could be the cause? I have it tapped on the fuel pump fuse

 

Yeah I'd try using one that's just accessory. I can't remember which one I used. I did hear something once about that happening when tapped to a certain source, but can't remember where now. Are you in the fuse box that's in the engine bay? Or in the cab?
