So the weather has gotten real cold over the last week. When I go to start the truck after it's been sitting all night or all day at work I hear a rattle coming from the engine compartment. It last for only a few seconds( goes away before I can pop the hood) and it also gets louder when I rev it. ( nothing caught in the fan). Any of you gents have this problem before?

Should also mention it's a 14 trd off-road with 5k miles and bone stock at the moment.

It wouldn't be your smog pump would it? It starts for a little when starting the truck and shuts off after a few seconds.

I don't think it would be. I hear the pump when the truck shuts off but never hear anything like this on start up before. Had the truck in for service a week and a half ago...that's the only other thing I could think of other than the cold weather (33 degrees the past week).

I will try to get a vid posted tomorrow. I would say the sound is coming from front drivers side.

Sounds like the oil filter is draining back to the crankcase and the engine is starting and has to fill the oil filter before the pressure comes up.

Lots of engines will do this when the filter is upside down and the anti drainback valve isn't working in the filter.

Get a replacement Toyota filter and just replace the filter.

My wifes 1998 Sienna Van ( V6 ) did this for a couple of hundred thousand miles and never had any issues.

So I did a cold start when I woke up and no noise present. Went grocery shopping for a half hour and noise was present.

It might be the heat shield attached to the under side of the body over the exhaust system. Mine did it until I managed to retighten the sheet metal screws holding it in place. Once it gets warm its fine but when cold its slightly loose and vibrates. Ron

Well I found what it was... Crawled under the truck to check the heat shield, once it all check out good I got a wild hair and checked the fan and fan shroud from the under side for piece of mind because noise got louder at a higher rpm and low and behold the dipshit and the dealership dropped a quart jug between the fan and motor and was rubbing the fan when the motor was on. Not real sure why it would only rub against the fan at a cold start though...
