Winchester SXT is some good ammo, coincidentally I was talking to one of our owners / instructors today about the SXT. He did an entry earlier this year that resulted in a shooting. The perpetrator who was armed had climbed into an attic and only made his shoulder available for a shot. The orthopedic surgeon who operated on the perpetrator indicated that there wasn't much left of his shoulder after the 180 grain .40 cal made contact. I don't care what the Internet whiz - bang keyboard commandos suffering from the Dunning-Kruger effect have to say. Kinetic energy isn't up for debate, mass and speed, period. A 180 grain bullet moving at the same speed as a 115 grain bullet has more kinetic energy. So, regardless of your personal preference or opinion, different cartridges have different ballistics and advantages / disadvantages. There are a lot of very smart people that test this stuff. I suggest everyone do their research and find the right caliber and bullet for your use. 9mm, .40 cal, .45 cal all have advantages and disadvantages, I personally like 147 grain + P HST 9mm and 165 grain FTX. Both will do serious damage.

Yeah, there are a lot of smart people who have done lots of testing and they're coming to the same conclusion with today's ammo... every single handgun round pokes holes. Some holes are slightly larger than other holes but they are all just tiny holes. We're not talking rifle rounds here with obscene amounts of energy to hit so it's just poking little holes. Placement trumps caliber every damn time. Your anecdotal story likely would have had the same result had the caliber been 9mm or .45acp because he likely hit a solid part of structure allowing the round to expand and transfer maximum energy to the wound channel. It's amazing how many people hear a story like that or a story about a guy getting shot 7 times with 9mm and surviving and thinking that one story is irrefutable proof of whatever side of the argument they want to take. Most of the time there are examples at other departments of the exact same thing happening with another caliber so the stories are fun but each situation is unique so claiming any one story proves it for any one caliber is foolish. For me, I'll take more opportunities to get that perfect placement through capacity and lower recoil taking multiple shots to get that placement over any chest pounding internet argument suggestion.

BTW, if all you care about is maximum kinetic energy why don't you carry a 50cal DEagle?

I used to own a Springfield EMP 9mm but traded it a year or so ago for a 1943 Rockola M1 Carbine. The EMP was a good shooter and fairly straight forward to maintain but it never really grew on me. I had several other small pistols that I preferred carrying and shooting.

I don't just care about kinetic energy - I am a little smarter than that.

I was offering an anecdotal story referencing SXT ammo solely to provide some context that SXT is high quality handgun ammunition...and of course he hit something structural...thus the Orthopedic Surgeon.

Thank you as always Ostrichsak for your commentary and of course imparting all of us with just a little bit of your knowledge...it makes us all smarter and we thank you for that.

I'd personaly go with the buck mark, I've heard the mosquito is very picky on ammo.

I have always been partial to the Ruger mark 3, love that pistol and never had an issue.

Ruger 22/45 and buy one of the new ones too. I know people that still own the one they got as a child (first gun) to this day so the little more you invest now will pay off in long-term reliability if they decide to keep it for life.
