how do you like the Vortex compared to any other red dots you have? I have two vortex strikefires that I got with the same PSA deal and I find the emitter to be dimmer and the field of view to be smaller than my Primary Arms red dots.

I would hope that the Viper is liked more (although not a red dot optic). That's a big price difference between the two.

I think Vortex is a good budget optic. I've only used my buddies Strikefire, but I dug it, especially for only about $120. If I had the dough, Eotech all the way.

Vortex is good for the money, but after owning both, I think primary arms is the best bang for your buck. They newest model of their micro sights has the lowest profile emitter in the industry so you get real good cowitness and their battery life is catching up to aimpoint.

The main thing I'm looking for is to be able to use my back up sights to cowitness. I'm thinking about an eotech or a Bushnell if I don't like the retical on the eotech.

A guy I know in my brother unit said he has 8 lowers that are 80% drilled out. I'm still new to the AR world so what exactly does that mean? He gave me one today at work but I haven't had a chance to actually open it up and look at it and probably won't until I get home.

Sounds like an 80% lower. Basically its a lower reciever without the fire control group area drilled out. Doesnt ocunt as a firearm that way and can be sold without paperwork. Finishing then doesnt require a serial number either

Gotcha. Any sites to check out to put me on the path to finishing it up and starting another build? This will be a build that takes a while since I already have an AR. Maybe make this one my AR pistol...eventually.

Painted it today, can't wait to take it to the property and see how it blends.

I think I'm gonna pull the nikon off the 30-30 and put it on my 6.8 upper, if I get a new barrel nut that fits my UTG quad rail it'll be ready for deer season.

Thanks, I like how it turned out.

Pretty basic, I asked in a thread here on TW (maybe the firearm BS thread if not this one) and a member had painted his and told me how, then I watched a youtube video.

I used rustoleum paint, tan (Basically FDE), earth brown, and what looks like OD green.
The base layer is the tan, after it dries you put leafs or sticks on the weapon and spray the brown, after it dried I took a branch with leafs still on it and layed that on the weapon, then did light green spray.

I think it turned out pretty good for my first time spraying.

If you want a desert paint job use the tan and brown. If I still lived in Ca I would've just done the tan and brown as it would've blended well with where we used to live.

Google is definitely the friend on 80% lowers. Without a jig you are going to have to have decent machining skills. The jigs make it so you can do it with whatever tools you have on hand pretty much.

Ive never done one nor been all that interested so never followed through on them

I like the idea of an 80% lower but it is intimidating

I'm starting to see why people stay away from them and what not. Like I said though, it was free and could be something I can do over time with more and research and tool acquirement. Thanks for the help!
