The way I look at it is it can't hurt anything so why not? Plus, if you have sand it might help get a stuck person unstuck. I buy 2 bags of tube sand, 60#'s each and tie them to the bed d rings. They don't shift at all.

I never understood the bags or extra weight in the bed.. If you have 4 wheel drive and the roads are covered in ice or snow then use it.

And FYI if you have the stock rugged trail tires that come on TRD tacomas you might want to replace them with a real all terrain tire or something that is designed to be driven in snow because they suck.

The best of luck with your Tacoma. Earlier this year, I sold my 01 Tundra and decided to give this Tacoma a try. This Sport model steers and handles far better than my Tundra ever did. Much easier to get stuff out of the bed, too. I think these Tacoma's will do very well this winter.

When I was a kid, 4x4's didn't exist and guys used to load up the back of their trucks with weight to enable traction (as much as possible). I guess I still think a truck needs weight, but as others have mentioned a double cab, 4x4 and good tires probably does the trick these days.

As for the BF G's All Terrain TA's, I had them on 2 of my Tundra's and plowed my big driveway with them on - had no issues at all. They also got me around in some serious MA snow storms. Moral of the story is I'll wear my TA's out first then probably by identical replacements.

i would be careful with what you put in the back for weight it can become a deadly projectile in an accident

I agree Rob. The Tundra Served its purpose for me, but I honestly like the Tacoma better and I'm sure it will serve its purpose around here on Mass roads and beaches.

Best of luck with your new truck too!

A lot of it has to do with the temp and conditions you're going to be driving in. I had BFG All-Terrain T/A KO's on my Dak and gave them a try during a winter up here. They were not very effective. Lotta sliding. Up here, ice tires are what's needed with tons of sipes. Ended up switching to Conti 4x4 IceContac's and then Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V1's after those were done. Much more effective.

Well, kid, I'm 4 times your age and 4x4's have been around longer me.

You should have kept it simple and just given the reason for loading up the bed!

EDIT: I mistook your number of posrts for your age. Sorry, and thank you for your service!

    South Shore MA here..

2010 single cab, 2 wheel drive. Had it 2 winters so far and zero issues, I don't even put weight in the bed.

This handles even better than my old truck, 2006 Chevy Colorado 4 wheel.

I put a snow brush and an ice scraper in the back. Hopefully you bought a 4wd - all you'll ever need providing your tires are in good shape.

Oddly, I said almost the exact same thing to someone not long ago when they asked why I had a 2 wheel drive truck in MA.

Now, if it turns out I do need some weight, I'll go buy 3 50 pound bags of sand. By the time spring rolls around, that sand will be needed for my pool filter..win-win.

No worries Alan. As for age, I hit the speed limit this year so I'm only old enough to start forgetting shit :D.

I'm sure 4x4's existed somewhere... like with the military vehicles I drove, but they were not widely available, or affordable for everyday rides like they are today. I was in my mid 30's before I ever owned one (a Gen-1 Toyota SR5) . I had a weighted down ol' 2WD Ford before that (like most everyone I knew had).

Here in mn. I have blizzak snow tires on a 2nd set of wheels and I use 3 - 50lb bags of water softener pellets for some added weight in the winter. Then I just use up the pellets after winter

    Polar opposites there!

I'm in central Ma with a 4 x 4 base Taco (my previous ride was a s10 GM 4 x 4.). Typically I have had little issues with 2wd and factory tires (either vehicle) - except for starts on hills with packed snow/ice. Perhaps a few pounds in the back would help - but I just reach over and flip the switch and problem solved.
