Anyone Considered Solar?

eventually ill be upgrading the inverter - i think ill need something like 1500W or 2000W --the wife has an electric kettle she likes using more than lighting the stove for hot water every time. itll save me some propane too... not like a 20lb tank will run dry very quickly with a two burner coleman though!

now... your battery... 125Ah, for a 6 cell 12v battery that not too shabby for an AGM. can i assume youre going to use it as your accessory battery? it doesnt seem to me that optimized for solar use and deep cycle fit in the same category... or that it would survive long doing double duty.. starting and powering accessories. id like to see charge and discharge curves, but apparently the manufacturer warns of discharging more than 50%.

edit: some AGM claim to safely discharge 80% and can handle sudden high draw applications (i.e. starting) ... apparently i dont know much about AGM

 

The battery is going in my expo trailer so not starting the truck.

 

I (capital I) would like a jet boil. im looking to get into ultras and shit and the jet boil would be great. however, the wife already has the electric kettle and shes particularly attached.

Don't waste money on solar. Not enough bang for the buck. 99% of the time you'll end up powering or recharging whatever you use with propane, a generator, or the truck engine with the onboard inverter.

 

The renogy panels are nice.. smallish and light. The 50w is about 22"x22" so I imagine the 100w is 44"x22" and about 5lbs. They are really thin too, not like the metal framed traditional panels.

They have a grommet in each corner. I plan to use a few suction cups to keep it on the truck for my camping needs. I ordered some suction cups with screws on the backs to suction to my shell. I just don't see why they'd need to be glued up there unless you are going to be running the fridge 24/7 even when parked at home.

 

Definitely buying a set up now. I'm seeing a pattern with you.

 

Why the eff not. If youve already invested in a $1000 fridge and $250 aux battery, its bout $200 to not ever have to worry about it. And you get to check out some new age tech, and free power after the initial investment.

I am fairly familiar with solar power, I have been using it in a cabin my wife and I own for years.

Hey, go get some flex panels for your truck or trailer and let us know how it works out. Go spend $199 for 100 watts and let us know how that works out for you.

Try putting some solid solar panels on and let us know how that works out for you. You won't be bragging about either one, I guarantee.

Im not sure why you are so adamant about being able to brag about anything. people wanted to run a fridge while camping. The fridge pulls around 2A per day and the 100w panel will push about 4. Thats enough to run the fridge and top off the battery while running inverter or lights overnight. Yes you could start the truck and run it for 30 mins a day, but i personally dont like breathing the exhaust in my campsite and its annoying to monitor.
