i printed off a copy of this tsb last night and called my local dealer. they tried giving me the run around that it needs to be bent before it can be replaced. nowhere on the tsb does it state that the tailgate HAS to be bent before replacement....so i called up the 1800 toyota customer service number. i was polite w/ the girl and told here the situation on how my tailgate bows when stood on and its within the VIN#'s on the tsb. she talked w/ someone and told me that the dealer was mistaken and the tailgate doesnt have to be bent in order to be replaced. she gave me a case number and said the service manager should be calling me in the next 3 business days to have it done. i'm at a lil over 31k miles on my 07, so i'm making sure its done before then...haha. if anyone else wants it done and the dealer says it has to be bent, do like i did and go over their heads and it'll be all gravy!!!!

oh...and i'll post more info when i go see the dealer next week....but from what i understand, they'll get the new "reinforced" tailgate, send it off to be painted, remove all components off ur original one, and put them on the new tailgate. as long as i dont have to debadge it again, we'll be aight...haha

There's an easier way, which is what I did.
Go to the parts counter, with TSB in hand and order the parts. Or you can call the parts department over the phone.
As soon as the parts come in, go to the parts counter verify they are actually in stock, then grab a service manager, show him the TSB and have THEM pay for the parts and do the install.
With parts in hand and TSB in hand, it's really difficult for the service manager to say no to you.

If they refuse, I would jump on the tailgate in front of them, until it bent. And then go jump on the tailgate of a new Tundra....that will show them there is a problem with the Taco's tailgate.

I think I might do that. I dont want to bend my tailgate on my own unless I have to.

mk...new update...i got a voicemail from a toyo rep saying that i was given false information from another rep and that i needed to call them back. i call back and they're not there and should call me back tomorrow b4 i go into work, so i should have another update tomorrow...but anyways, i'll be raising some hell if they dont want to replace something that they are aware of and documented to be faulty...that'd be like saying the brakes are effed up like a fords, then not replacing them until after it causes a crash

ok...so i talked to toyota HQ today and they said that the tailgate DOES have to be bent before they'll replace it...contrary to what i was told when i first called. i asked them that say the door hinges were noted to be faulty and would allow the door to fall off, they wouldnt replace them until the door actually fell off....and they said YES!! seem's kinda shady to me if u ask. they have it all documented being faulty b4 a certain VIN, but yet they wont replace it unti lit bends. they also said its not covered under the extended warranty, so everyone thats under that VIN better go bend it before 36k miles. i'm at 31k, so i've got some work to do!!!

It's about $40 in parts, but supposedly they actually repaint the tailgate. Took them 5 days to do the TSB, and they had parts in had.

I would still try and have a stealership do the TSB for you, assuming you do not go to the same stealership as Hodges.

TSB's all work the same way. They are very different from recalls, which is something documented as faulty. TSB's are for the sole purpose to provide technicians with solutions to problems that toyota has seen happen. Just because some bent, does not necessarily mean to them that all will do the same. The TSB just tell the technician "if you run into this situation, we have a solution that should work" rather than the techs having to try different things. They are not obligated to just perform TSB's to all vehicle VIN's it applies to.
