Like others I would say go back to stock to preserve your warranty. Unless you REALLY want headers. Normally I would say screw it and fix it yourself but it is a 2015...

Anyways lol, my local Toyota dealership doesn't do their own body work so they sent my truck to a third party place for bodywork and to install the new cat. Toyota said I could go aftermarket with the Cat w/o voiding my warranty but I've read through forums on here and most people have said to use Toyota cats. Y'all have any input on that? Are there better flowing Cats that will hold up like a factory one?

As mentioned OP, have the truck restored to it's original condition. There truly is no performance change with any other cat that you will be able to tell unless you replace the entire system.
Remember, if you go aftermarket it potentially could be costly down the road.
Spend your money on functional mods that will improve your personal enjoyment....if the enjoyment is a cat that has a bit more airflow, so be it :).

I would also recommend that you get your own body work quotes and get a feel for whom you are doing business with. Another reason for it is that your dealer may be adding a surcharge to the total. Many do for sub'd out work.
    The best of luck.

Sometimes there is no better instruction then an accidental discharge. 26 years on the job, I've never seen anybody do it twice. And while thinking about this, I've never seen or heard of anybody who was in the same room as an AD ever repeating the same thing.

Yea one of my best buddies (see below) shot a hole in the floor of my brothers jeep. Fortunately he was in Vietnam and we could fix it. We bought a 12x12x1/8" piece of lead, got some hammers and pounded it in so it fit well. We covered it back up and it was fixed. Fortunately that's the only thing that got messed up. Yea he should fix it and I'm sure all those who were riding in the Taco will unload the shotguns when going from point a to point b. from now on.

Did anyone suggest checking junkyards for a manifold/cat? Probably no '15s, but I assume that 12+ will fit. Assuming your are not going headers, this keeps the engine stock and keeps the cat Toyota.

Thank god he did not have the weapon pointed at you when it went off. Even the most experienced and well trained can have an accidental discharge. I saw this video in training awhile back and it has stuck with me ever since. It is definitely not funny as the youtube poster notes but it shows even a professional can make mistakes.

OP- I have a 2 month old version of the same truck and I'm pissed about a nut that fell on the hood and dented it. I can't imagine the level of pissed off I'd be if a friend of mine did what yours did.

If he's a good friend let him pay it off as he can. If he shafts you then it cost you $2k to figure out he aint such a good friend, not a bad deal.

I hate to contribute to the thread derail, but just in case others read this and think it's always true...

This might be true in ND (no idea), but if so it's a state specific thing. I can tell you that in Florida and Georgia the act of hunting has nothing to do with your CCW. In fact, in Florida (not an open-carry state) you can open carry if you're headed to or from hunting. Make sure you understand your state's laws.

Again, sorry for contributing to the derail but there is a lot of misinformation out there related to guns that can confuse people.

Maybe I missed it but were both of you in the truck during the discharge? If so how's the hearing? That had to be freaking loud! Surprised you ain't replacing some glass!
On the original question I would go back stock. Also welcome that's a heck of first post!

IM having a hard time believing g the bird shot penetrated the cat. Is the cat actually punctured? Do you have any check engine light on? If the cat isn't punctured, it's most likely fine if you have no check engine light.

Its not illegal to accidentally discharge your firearm in your vehicle. They dont need to know they were out hunting. Could have happened while putting one in, didn't realize it was loaded, etc. People shoot their ceiling in their houses all the time, in urban areas where it is illegal to discharge a firearm and nothing happens to them. They are called accidents. Not the brightest accidents, granted, but accidents none the less.

I dont see any reason NOT to involve insurance. I certainly would.

I do, the increase in rates may be more then the cost to fix. Really depends on what part of the coverage the insurance would cover this incident under.

I had an incident where my son did some damage to my truck (driving related though), after talking with the insurance and getting some numbers, the increased insurance rates would cost more over 3 years then just paying for the damage myself.

I would of used my insurance...started out with a "yall aren't going to believe what happen, but I shot my truck with a 12 gauge."

Me and Dad used to use his old better Ranger as a rest. He had a couple bullet skins across the hood...added character.

Not an invalid point, the OP needs to work that out. All I am saying is I wouldnt rule it out.

Run the financials, maybe he has a perfect driving record, no tickets, etc. and he will be "forgiven" this incident, if there is such a thing in insurance speak.

I would ring it out of my friends neck first though, for being a dumbass :D
