Radar Detector Mounting

I just picked up a 9500i last night and I think a good mounting location would be right above the rear view mirror but the suction cups won't stick to the black dot shade material above the mirror (the actual detector would get a clean view in this location). Anyone have any luck grinding away a small match to mount a radar detector??

The 9500i is nails so far. I have already blocked a lot of the X-band false alarms in my office area so it is now quiet driving around. It saved me from a speed track on I-35 this morning. The detector went crazy and I saw cops pulling people over left and right.

 

Have you tried scraping some off with a razor blade? Just a guess, but that's what I'd try first.

 

I hate to deface my beloved Taco but that was my first thought also. I think I am going to mount a small piece of plexaglass using two sided tape and stick the suction cups to that.....

 

you shouldnt put it up there since the "dots" will decrease your radar's sensitivity. I have mine mounted about 2 inches above the dash (over the center console's driver air vent).

 

Just the suction cups will be on the dots. The part that matters will be below the dots with no obstruction. If I leave it in plain sight some illegal alien or crack head will smash my window, steal it and hit the pawn shop.

 

My V1 is mount right on the dash with velcro. Works great there.

I dont think its a good idea. Does the 9500 have 360 degree detection? If so, you'd be mounting it too high for rear detection. My 8500 does not function well up there.

 

The higher the detector is mounted the better. I think for each inch you get some thing like an extra .20 miles. Just make sure that you have a clear view from the rear and front of the windshield and rear window.

 

the makers of BELL (glorified paper weight) say the radar detector should be mounted about 4 inches above the dash. others say as high as possible. mount it in the middle, kinda like 50/50. You'll get the best of both high and low, happy medium..... kinda like 4 shots of tequila, not too high, not too low, but just right.
