octane question

what octane is recomended for the v6. and what is everybody else using?

 

I believe it recommends 87.....

I'm using 87 simply because gas is expensive enough!!

In my older tacoma that I owned (96) - when hauling or towing heavy loads, I'd use higher octane to prevent knocking & pinging.

 

Recomendations as found in the user manual is Premium for optimal performance but will run fine on Regular.

I'm running mid-grade since it doesn't knock with mid and I don't have to spend premium prices when I'm not towing. I do fill with premium when towing my travel trailer though.

 

Are you saying that a Taco running on regular is retarded? Them's fightin' words!

 

It recommends midgrade which depending on where you live is different. In Chicago I would use 89 octane but in Denver the equivalent due to altitude is 87 octane, so that is what I use.

 

And in CO I use 91, because my baby deserves the best! Not to mention I only fill up once every 2 - 3 weeks.

told me the same thing. From what they said, elevation makes a big difference. If I travel to CA I would put premium in my Tacoma. Howeer, as we run around at 4500 feet above sea level or more, the regular will work fine. However, he also told me I would most likely get about 1-2 MPG better with premium.

 

I use to put 87 in my Tacoma, and yes it does retard the timing because someone told me to try 90 for a month and after a while the engine began to run smoother and felt more responsive. I do a lot of driving so I full up twice a week.
