So im still in my find the things i like and dont like phase in my new taco. I have a friend at work that has a 2012 to compare things with on my 2015. in gearing up for winter i was looking around my truck for areas which would get salt or sand blasted. I noticed the front wheel wells have some exposed metal, with some areas of thin liner. Maybe 50% thin liner, 50% exposed painted metal. I looked at my friends truck and all metal parts in the well have the sprayed/brushed liner.

What do you guys find in your front wells? Im afraid rocks will beat it up.

Only the forward top is lined on mine, then a thin section along the top. Rest is black paint. Mines a 13 with just under 17k miles. No chips at all in the wheel wells. I have some small rust spots elsewhere on the frame and A arms.

You could get a couple of cans of Rustoleum and then spray-pray at the metal and hope it holds up!

I had to spray the entire underside of my F-150 before I bought the Tacoma. Now I'm thinking it wouldn't be a bad idea to do this before it starts...

i think that ship has sailed with winter here. Plus, i think its something that should have been done at the factory. it seems cheap if its a cost cutting move.

I need to double check but probably not considering that when I splash through a mud puddle EVERYTHING under my hood/carriage/etc gets splattered.

I'm not too worried about it though because we have some good DIY car washes with high pressures hoses that I can use to spray all of that salt and sand off before it gets caked on.

Are you guys applying the fluid film in potential problem areas or doing an entire under-body coating?

Also, has there ever been any research/attempts to prove what kind of under-body coating works best? I would imagine you have a range of options from simple paint, to a rubberized coating like linex/rhino, and the liquid film....thoughts?

Thanks Boogie, seems similar to mine with slightly more coverage. I see you also have areas where there's no liner painted/sprayed on. As i said in my OP, my firends 2012, maybe even a 2013 i forgot, has a nice thick coat everywhere. All of my previous cars had that or a full plastic liner. Its little stuff like that i wish i noticed before handing over the big check.

3m tape on the back of my fog light adapter. Couldn't find a decent surface to mount it to yet since the cord is pretty short.

I don't think there has been any real issues with the wheel wells rusting and rotting out. Theres more issues with frames rusting.
