Didnt think early 2nd gen tacos would qualify for a new frame replacement if the frame is rusted enough until i saw this thread. I have a 2005 access cab off road with terrible frame rust. The front hard brake lines are extremely corroded too, afraid if i touch it a hole may develop. I was a member of the toyota owner site since i bought my taco and sent out an email about my situation. When i became a member i saw that the original location of the truck was in Vermont. See where it goes from here.

Edit: my rear leaf springs are also extremely rusty too. Noticed a recall for it but no remedy yet.

It is amazing the amount of great information available on this forum. The latest being rusty frame issues regarding '05 - '08 Tacoma trucks.
I called a local dealer and have an appointment to have my frame inspected. I was told that if there are no perforations or weak areas they will clean and coat the frame with an undercoating/rust inhibitor. If the frame does not pass inspection they will replace the frame.
The inspection/undercoating will take two days and they will supply me with a rental car at no cost.
If a new frame is needed I am told that it may take 4 - 6 weeks to arrive.
My inspection is scheduled for January 20th and I will post the results.
An interesting side note ... not all dealerships are equipped to apply the undercoating. I had to call three dealerships before I found one equipped with the proper ventilation system to do the job.

I posted about this apparently in the wrong thread. Glad I'm not the only one who got a call, however... I was told I would lose the truck for two days, I suppose for inspection. And the coating would take two days. If the frame needed to be replaced, two months.

I'm not to happy about this. Especially with the snow heading up the east coast.

Just be cautious of this particular recall...if they inspect and FAIL your frame, it is UNSAFE for use and you will sign a waiver saying that you are taking it off the lot without recall work being done and CARFAX will for ever list your vehicle as FAILED RECALL until you pay the dealer what they want for the work. In my case $2000 - For some this might be the best option. I'm still deciding, but Toyota will not pay a dime for anything but the frame. All other parts including leafs are yours to replace!!

I was in Asheville, NC today picking my truck up from some routine service & saw another truck with a frame replacement underway. Very cool as the entire bed was off & the cab suspended. the fram was in place but lots of other stuff would merit replacement from rust. Sorry I wasn't allowed to take a pic. If you happen to have your truck being done try and get to see it when it is in the disassembly phase & see what you may want to fix out of pocket. Gotta be a whole lot cheaper $$ while it's apart.

Anyone have info on warranty of frame after treament of frame or replacement? Not too enthused about treament. Truck will be 7 years old soon and since there is a problem there will be a problem even if they slop some stuff on it. Rust starts internally on the frame. Went through this with 99 - beautiful white TRD access cab 65k. Crushed it and bought another toyota truck. Deja Vu? Great PR for quality. Absolute BS.

posted this on another thread here

My 05 went in for a seat belt recall a few weeks ago and I was told it needed to have frame replaced. Originally they were taking it in a few days but I still have truck. Was told by rep that if brake light comes on pull over and call them. (LOL)
I read somewhere that the rear leafs would be done for free.

I had an 2000 that was part of the buy back so I got the 05.
Originally had a 98 that my friend has almost 300,000 mi. great shape but my friend just found a big hole in frame under bed.

Just got my frame inspected and it passed. Apparently the frame needs to have holes rotting through. A bunch of rust and corrosion isnt good enough to fail it. I am taking truck back tuesday for the leaf spring recall. Its just for one side, im assuming driver. Not sure yet what all it covers, but ill let you guys know.

That's werid, my frame had maybe some rust spots no holes and was in decent shape. I'd been keeping an eye on it for a while. And they failed it.

Just got my 05 back from frame replacement a couple weeks ago, they replaced the rear leaf springs, the front lower A arms, and all the brake lines at no charge. I had new shocks installed during frame change at no labor charge. Did a great job, truck drives like new.

I found a new dealer who ordered the frame and let me drive away until it arrives. 70 days to receive it and 3-4 on the lift. $0 out of pocket!

Not a recall, "limited service campaign" means they are not obligated to do anything...they are choosing to help us out by replacing the frames...UGH

Don't let the dealer take your money. Find one who will work with you. Some seem cool but some will just rip you off if you let them.

Good luck 2nd gen Tacos 05-08

Some shit I got on craigslist
I just went to Toyota of Annapolis (Maryland) two days ago for the recall. Frame has a hole in it; gonna be replaced as soon as the frames are off back order (9-11 wks!). My question is, was anyone able to get a rental besides a camry/corolla/prius? They're telling me I cant drive my truck in the meantime, but I don't want to drive a camry for the next 3 months either. Any chance I can convince them to give me a 4runner/tacoma?
