So my wife bought herself a 2012 Highlander this weekend. It was stickered all over 7 year/100k Toyota Certified. Bought as such. The only thing I wasn't crazy about looking at the car were the aftermarket wheels, but they made no difference to my wife. I told her I'd find her some stockers on Craigslist.

Had to bring it back today for interior/exterior cleaning and protectant (we have a dog and a 6 month son, didn't want interior trashed). Was told to go talk to the finance department which I thought was strange. Finance says the car can't be certified because of the aftermarket wheels! I say bs, it was sold to us certified. Told them to put stock wheels on it then, they said wouldn't work. They are willing to give a warranty comparable to what came certified, but I still find the whole situation strange and frustrating.

My wife is supposed to go tomorrow to finalize (what was already done and signed for) paperwork. I know certified is supposed to have a 160 pt inspection. I wonder what else they missed... I'm glad they are offering a warranty. As long as it matches what we bought I'm ok with it. The only thing I want is to have an independent shop perform a 160 pt inspection since I don't think the dealer did much with theirs.

    What would you guys do?

Did you already sign paperwork on it? What exactly is she finalizing? If they want to give you a different warranty, I would comb through that bitch and make sure it's exactly the same.

I would argue that it was advertised as certified and that they have to honor it.

Only except a real toyota warranty. Not some random warranty company. They rarely even actually do the 160 pt inspection.

If they wont give you an actual toyota warranty that you can take the vehicle to any toyota dealership then walk from the deal. If its a deal breaker for you.

Yeah, a comparable warranty would be Toyota factory backed 12 mo 24,000 bumper to bumper then power train until 2019 or 100k. Yes, deal was signed sealed and delivered.

They also raised her APR 1% on the final contract from what she was pre-approved for. Snuck it past her. We're refinancing at the lower rate.

Pretty shady. If it was a dealership, Id contact BBB or Toyota Corporate and work with them.

I would say if everything was already finalized they can't backtrack. It's a signed agreement.

The dealer I bought my wife's 2009 venza tried to pull kinda the same thing. I made a complaint with Toyota corporate and they took care of it in a VERY timely manner.

I won't name bash em (yet), but it was a Toyota dealer here in the sf bay area. I agree, it all seems kinda shady to me.

Lol. BBB is a joke. I'd say walk from the deal. Super shady. Go buy somewhere else and tell them you'll sue jf they give you any guff about walking.

Curious what they used as an excuse for why the Venza wasn't certifiable

I can't figure out why aftermarket 17" wheels would void a certification :notsure:. Stockers are 17s also...

because the dealership is stocked full of asshats that are trying to fawk you around. no aftermarket warranty is as good as the manufacturers, and toyota certainly isn't gonna go to bat for you if you need something down the road.
