I went from a $500 deductible to a zero for $3/month. I'll take that, since it takes 13 years of $3/month to hit ONE $500 deductible.

    Thanks for the lesson.

Same thing I was thinking......It's not a huge savings, unless you are a terrible driver with a terrible record...

I end up with a broken windshield a year at a min.

    And you know this how?

I've had geico for years. Last car I totaled was in 2004. March 21st 2004 to be exact. Single car accident. Car was trashed. Happened on a Sunday. Monday claims adjuster came, looked at the car with me. Next day I was told the amount they were giving me for my car. I had a loan on car(I was younger and dumber and paid too much), They told me they would only give me 19k for car, I owed 23k. Told them this, adjuster called me back next day and said they were giving me 23k. DONE.

Ex-wife rear ended a car at the mall. Car was fixed and back on the road in 1 week. No hassles, no problems. Smooth and clean.

I've gotten great service from geico and have always been pleased.

That's why I changed my deductible, I got a chip on the freeway that cracked 3 miles later and had to pay out of pocket $475 for a new windshield, because my deductible was $500 and my insurer doesn't have a separate windshield policy. That sucked. When I found out it was $3 more per month to have a ZERO deductible policy I was glad to take it, especially now that I did the numbers and see it takes 13 years to recoup my money lost on the windshield replacement.

The logic behind getting lesser insurance so you have more money for mods is pretty foolish, IMO, unless you're only skimping on deductible amounts and not coverage limits.

In your case, for $3/mo that's a no-brainer. Mine was a difference of a couple hundred a year when going from $500 to $1000.

I have added some numbers below for my scenario. In my case, not having a claim for just under two years gets me to breakeven when talking $1k vs $500 deduct. In the end, it depends on your limits, # of vehicles, and how often you file a claim. I'd guess (really no idea) that 5-yrs is probably average for a household.

    This is for a '10 4R and a '13 Taco:
    Excel table didn't take
    $1k deduct = $1674 Annual
    $500 deduct = $2024 ($350 diff)
    $250 deduct = $2218 ($544 diff)
    $50 deduct = $2610 ($936 diff)

I'm sure you are well pleased with your insurance, as I am with mine, but neither you nor I have anything to compare our insurance to. Our opinions are counted in multiple choice questions by J.D.Powers, and the results are published as an opinion poll. It is exactly that, just opinions, with no hard fact comparisons.

I understand that they are actual Customer experiences.... Look at the many links that I posted... I have also been a GEICO Customer for 35 years and have made a few claims in my time...

Obviously I am not alone. To call them " Second rate or Fly by night " is only someone making noise IMO.

Crazy. I have my truck and a $10k engagement ring insured for $104/month with zero deductible.

Your scenario definitely isn't worth it. I feel lucky now!

Not trashing your beloved GEICO. Just dissing the J.D.Powers rating system.

I was thinking the same thing... that response was complete lazy bullshit. The least he could have done was run the plate and gave the info to your INS company.

So did they catch the Guy ????

Earlier comment said - ".... how can someone do this and just drive away ?? "

Of course most people just want to dot the right thing and own up to a mistake (it's not like it was deliberate in most cases.) But consider the other X% - Probably no job or decent job, no/little money, perhaps no insurance and has little of value to lose if caught. However, If I did it, I'd get caught, Sued, Put in jail, maybe lose my decent job, then the house, etc. etc.

Sadly, some people don't care and use the system to get away with so much when they have little to lose.

I've never had a problem with USAA. Even when I was unemployed and Jersey wouldn't honor my unemployment claim, USAA stood behind me and did not drop my coverage when I told them I only had $100 to pay them that month.

USAA has paid many other claims with in a week.

So I don't know what you are talking about when you say US Agencies suck.

    Maybe it's just you.

It was a civil matter and since no bodily injury happened, there was no "crime" committed.

You don't live in Louisiana, where we have the highest rates. I just moved from Washington, and my rates doubled. Reason is, there are horrible drivers here, the roads are like mountain trails, the flooding rate is huge and oh yeah, theft is outrageous. If a thief takes your car, they only have to put it on a barge or container ship and sail it to Mexico/Cuba/Puerto Rico/Dominican Republic/Jamaica etc. It's higher here than Texas or even New Jersey/New York.

Oh, plus people here don't stop at red lights, and they cut you off all the time even though there isn't any room to merge.

My renters insurance doubled as well, based on theft rate and flooding/storms. And since the roads are terrible, the response time is quite long.

I had Allstate before I had USAA. Allstate was actually raising the rates every month, without any claim or reason on the customers part. When I asked why, I was told that rates went up because the board voted it in. Luckily I had a fellow Marine that told me about USAA and I switched. Since then, the only time I received an increase was when I added more cars or coverage. Even when I crashed/totaled my Trailblazer, my rates stayed the same.

USAA has handled my claims quickly and even helped me when I was rear ended. They "went after" the other insurance company when they only wanted to give me $2,000 for a vehicle that had a KBB of over $6,800.

Not to mention I receive a check from USAA every year. Amount depends on the dividends the group makes. Since USAA isn't an insurance company and we are all group members, we reap the benefits.

How many of you guys get a check "from" your insurance company every year?
