drilling the frame for sliders

Anyone have a how to on a second gen for this>? Also what bits and drills did you use>? Is a cordless gonna cut it? or a hammer drill a better option? also how long did it take you. Thanks!

 

no hammer drill. That will flatten the bit. a quality cordless will be fine. I suggest using a cutting fluid like tap magic or something along those lines. Will speed up the process and also save your bits

 

You're going to want a corded drill, not a cordless. I used high speed metal bits, as the cheap dewalt bits from home depot won't last. A hammer drill is only used on concrete, so don't do that.

The last time I had to drill holes in the bottom of the frame I used my floor jack to get leverage on the drill.

Just make sure you go slow and don't overheat the bits. Good luck.

gotcha probably gonna get a cheap cordless and the metal bits and go up in size. dont have a floor jack at this place yet.

 

Used a corded drill for my all pro sliders. Took about an hour or so a side with help from a friend. Broke a few bits in the process so i woulnt cheap out on the bits. Takes some tinkering to get them all lined up. Used my floor jack to push up to get front holes alligned. Also used jack to hold slider in place while i marked the holes for drilling. Good luck

+1 for welding. Drilling them is a colossal pain in the ass.

If you're dead set on drilling through, go slow. Let the drill and the bit do the work. Moderate pressure, don't over heat the bit or the metal (You'll temper it otherwise and it will be even harder to drill then) and use cutting fluid. Even WD40 works honestly.

 

Start with a small bit.....good luck

Use cutting fluid and get some good bits. Makes a huge difference.

 

Use a step bit. Those suckers eat through nearly anything.

I swear by step up bits. Time and agony will be reduced drastically.

 

I drilled 4 holes and said fthis and went and held them welded on.

 

ya i want them bolt on in case i have to do anything later with the frame or if i get a new truck, assuming the frames stay similar. Im gonna get a corded drill and the step up bits because alot of people have had good results with it. still use oil with them?

ha cost more than the sliders them selves.

 

i should be fine to bolt the sides on then make my marks and drill the holes then is the plan so i dont have to hold the slider up there.

My dad had a heavy duty corded drill from before I was born. That placed on a 2x4...use the wood as leverage to evenly push up on the drill..plus some wd40..broke bit on first hole cause it got caught on the way out of of the other side...rest of the holes went well!
