Knocking from front suspension

I've had this issue going on for several months. The noise sounds like it is coming from the passenger side front suspension. It occurs when the truck is rocking like going over rr tracks. It is intermittent. It will do this for a couple of weeks and then be silent for a couple weeks.

Dealership could not replicate. I have another service appointment scheduled but as my luck would have it, the truck is not making the noise right now.

Any thoughts?

 

Are you absolutely positively certain that you don't have something under the seat, in the glove box, or in any other storage areas that are 'knocking around' when you go around bumps?

 

Yes I've even emptied all these places and was able to reproduce the sound.

 

Check for loose roof-rack, bumper, lost tool

 

No roof rack. Noisey as hell for two weeks. We got snow and below freezing temps on Monday and not a peep since the weather's tuned. Service appointment with the service manager today and I feel like a douche.

 

When I bought my 2014 TRD OR the dealer ended up replacing my front passenger UCA b/c it made this type of noise every time I hit a slight bump like entering my driveway, or speed bumps. I'd check that out. Take a tech from the dealer over a speedbump or something to replicate it. Pappas Toyota in St. Louis immediately knew what it was and ordered brand new UCA to replace.

 

This is where I would start. Check all suspension components. Tie rods, ball joints, sway bar links, strut mounts.

 

I bought a 2014 DCSB Off-Road a few weeks ago & have noticed the exact same knocking sound. Let us know what the dealership says.

 

Like I said in previous post. A new passenger UCA fixed it for me. No more noise.

 

x2 on the UCA, get it checked out...also Look into the lower ball joints and make sure they aren't going bad and make sure everything is tight under there

oh and btw, did you happen to take that video crossing the RR tracks on Smokey Row close to Bennet pkwy? haha

So I was working with the service manager and a master tech. Of course the sound could not be duplicated, but both agreed by the noise in the video that something was amiss. The tech mentioned chasing a ghost sound that ended up being something banging against the firewall.

They checked all the bolts, got 3/4 of a turn on the passenger front cab mount. And 1/4 turn on the strut mount.

Service manager said to come in once it starts up so they can verify and he will forward my videos to Toyota. He mentioned if they can't verify in person Toyota won't deal with it.

as far as the problem, the dealer is gonna be a pain in the ass, and assuming your going to Tansky, they are difficult to work with. At least you have the video to show them.
One thing that you can try, if you haven't already is leaving it with them for a couple days (if you can) to see if they can replicate the problem

 

I've been dealing with Toyota Direct, ever since I'd had very poor service at Tansky back in 2010. I mean really poor service.

Toyota direct has really treated me well and the service manager seems committed to resolving the problem for me. They offered to give me a loaner and leave the truck, but I told them I'd just bring it by once the noises returned.

 

Thats really good service if they offer you a loaner..obviously I would take that offer if you can't replicate it for them
