I know a few daughters of retired police officers in CA who are told by their Dad to always carry. None of them have permits :D

Because none of them have been arrested for carrying a weapon concealed without a permit. :D

Felonies tend to hurt for a while.

Do you carry frequently without a CCW? I've been of the mind that if I really am in a situation where I need to be concealing a firearm (I have no CCW) then it's a situation where preserving my life is more important than the ensuing court battle of carrying illegally. But not sure I understand the monumental risk of carrying without a CCW just for the sake of doing so. It's a felony AFAIK, and convicted felons lose their right to firearm ownership which is not worth any risk of carrying just for giggles.

Have you tried to get a CCW in your county?

I dont carry at all. I live in LA county so applying for CCW has the same effect as going up to the officer at the counter and telling them your best joke.

Gotcha. My county was/is similar, the sheriff OKs your permit and it's basically been impossible for his tenure but I think I read about a supreme court ruling that was supposed to change that. If I lived 30 minutes north of where I do, they're as easy as pie to get.

    Oh well.

Thats pretty shitty they can just deny you...

Do they have to give a reason why your declined? Or do they just ignore the application or something?

It's the Peruta ruling. It turns CA into shall issue but we have to wait for the San Diego district court to re-rule since the 9th circuit court of appeals can only over rule and send the ruling back to the original court. It allows self-defense to be a good cause in apply for CCW.

I haven't applied, my dad did when I was young as he was frequently carrying large amounts of cash on his person/vehicle and was frequently doing so at night and was denied because that didn't justify his needing to be armed. I've always heard you either need to be rich, the sheriff's buddy, or a celebrity to get a CCW in my county. No clue on the validity, but I do know several people who have applied and been denied because they didn't have enough of a requirement. I don't know anybody who has been successful, personally. Up north 30 minutes they have a lot more problems with drug cultivation and use, so I assume that's why it's easier to get, it's also a lot more rural of an area. 4 hours north they have huge issues with those things and the police pretty much insist you have a CCW and carry if you're legally able to do so, but this is a place in the middle of nowhere where the cartels run heavy during grow season.

I thought I read somewhere about that, that SD county sheriff said he's ok with the new ruling, but he doesn't plan on 'OKing' any new permits until next year or next appeal or something

Some sheriffs have changed their practices to accept CCWs that state self-defense as soon as the Peruta ruling came out. Other counties, such as LA county, Santa Clara County, and San Diego County are waiting for further possible challenges before changing their policies. This may have a chance of going to the Supreme court if SD county and/or the CA District Attorney choose to do so, which will make final the CCW rules for ALL States in the US should the Supreme Court accept the cast.
