A 30 year old Staal is the last guy the leafs need to spend cap and assets on right now. They don't need scoring, they are 4th in goals for and have been for years. They need another top 2 defenceman. It's obvious. They look to 3-4-5 guys like Reilly, Gardiner and Franson to play too high in the lineup and it kills them. They are not winning anything the next two years so there's no use to make a trade for a 30 year old who has already played almost 800 career games is just dumb and something they did over and over again 10-15 years ago to get then into this dump

 

I think Bourque is playing tonight.

 

On most nights you wont notice he is the lineup and once in a while 2 or 3 goals in one game...

Top two defensemen are next to impossible to acquire in the past 5 years of the NHL. The salary cap makes it extremely difficult to trade away good defensive assets without getting similar assets mostly because the average top 2 pairing will spend over 40% of the game on the ice. You need those guys to be everything; not just good defensive, offensive, or tough D. No one is going to take on Phaneuf or whoever you want to call TO's number two in exchange for someone better without a major package of defensive prospects or high picks. Similarly no one will trade a top 2 D for a forward without a massive pile of similar assets involved. The mess TO went through in the last 10 years had mostly to do with how they traded away every high draft pick trying to go for now rather than go for the future, getting a #1 d man will not only cost far too much but it will also be night on impossible. I bet it costs at least a top 2 D, a prospect, and a few 1st/2nd round picks.

Simply put, you cannot trade for a top 2 D under 30 without giving up the farm and what you have on the ice. With the salary cap you won't find them on the free market either.

Staal will, at worst, cost Toronto a number 2 center, one of those 3-4-5 guys that are under performing (Gardner, his entire game is terrible other than the fact he can skate), and maybe a 1st or 2nd round pick. Talented guys over 30 but not spent just happen to be a good source of leadership in the dressing room, especially when they've come from a leadership role. Admit it, who in the leafs dressing room is there to give a stern eye or a big hit when the team is down? The bottom 9 is too new to have that respect and the skilled players have failed when it comes to being played in a leadership role. With a trade for Staal management can see if the problem in TO is really a leadership thing (which Staal will improve) or just that the team isn't good enough. To be honest if the team isn't good enough they need to blow it up smartly and this time keep all the first/second round picks they can as well as a couple of hard nosed cogs to get things back together. Find a leader and get the dressing room behind him or start fresh with a new core and insert the talent around them. Calgary has shown how having 2-3 hard working and demanding leaders on a team can turn a set of AHL talent into a well oiled machine.
