Ripped out my shitty gas insert a few weeks ago and installed a wood insert. I went with a Pacific Energy Neo1.6. I've been wanting wood heat for a while, as wood is free and easily obtainable for me. I happy with the Neo so far, easily heats my whole house. I've managed to get a few overnight burns so far, but most of the time i am unable to do so. i didn't expect it from such a small insert anyways but when i do its a pleasant surprise.

Now i just need to paint of those bricks to match. i wish the old owners didnt paint the bricks and slate, but im stuck with it now i guess.

I'd love too buts it's a little hard to come by up here in campbell River. I always look out for some when I'm working on the south island but never see any good logs. How much longer does it go for compared to fir?

Doesn't grow in the numbers up here as you would see South Island. There are very few arbutus trees in the areas I work, and I'd prefer to keep the existing ones standing.

    I'm a forester.

Close to the ocean there are some, but the licenses I work in are mostly inland, were there are no arbutus. There's some blocks closer to the ocean I'm hoping they will cut soon, so I can go salvage some arbutus.

Well heat rises so it can help with the work of moving warm air from basement to the living space upstairs, you could cut in a floor mounted R/A grill (stamped steel you can walk/stand on) Maybe even install a small , low RPM exhaust type fan to help transfer warmer air to where its needed, I wouldn't disturb the R/A ducting...

An "in duct" induction exhaust blower may be needed to induce proper draft for a 30' chimney, no obstructions in liner I'm assuming..

If you need a draft inducer to promote a draft there is some thing wrong with the chimney. Even a back yard boiler with a 6' chimney will draft to some extent. pretty much any thing 15' or better should draft fine through any lined chimney. My 30' chimney is over drafted so I use a barometric damper it reduces the draft by opening a weighted door if the draft becomes too extreme. Wind and a high fire will cause it to open thus reducing the draft, it saves a lot of wasted heat and wood. It was windy when the picture was taken it usually is not open quite that far but by doing so it reduced the over draft even more.

in order to get the flue down to the basement stone mason had to create a "dog leg" offset to get around the upstairs fire place. it's always been a choke point, made worse with the 6" liner. nothing i can do with it.

Not exactly true, I've installed several inducer "in duct" fans on exceptionally long flues, actually code required for evacuating all carbon monoxides

This is almost exactly the conditions where an inducer would be used..

Harden your bark, there are storms on the horizon.
How much does a stockpile that size cost?
