Radio (Entune JBL) restarts when I get a text

I haven't had much luck searching for this on the forums or on Google. I can find some similar issues but no one really has a resolution.

My truck isn't even six months old yet and the radio has been causing issues for me since shortly after I got it. It began with random restarts, which I didn't really think much of. Then it started restarting every time I received a text message on my phone. Eventually, it escalated to it restarting over and over in an infinite loop. It would boot up and then immediately shut down.

At that point, I took it into the Toyota dealership. I showed the service rep the issue and he was baffled. When I got the truck back, I asked for a root cause. He said, "It needed a software update." I kind of stared at him blankly for a second and then said, "That's not a root cause. What caused the problem?" He repeated the same thing...software update. Whatever...it worked so I went on my way.

Fast forward just a week or two and now it's restarting when I receive a text message again. The workaround right now is to set the radio to not automatically get text messages from my phone. Not a super big deal as I mainly just use the bluetooth for streaming audio. The other functionality doesn't mean much to me. BUT...it does kind of suck when I'm sold something that doesn't work.

I have the feeling that if I take the truck back into the dealership, they're just going to attempt to do another software update. That's not what it needs. Based on some related research I've done, I believe it may be a hardware issue. I've tried contacting Toyota directly, but I'm not having much luck in the way of getting a response.

So...has anyone else experienced this lovely issue?

Read things similar to this, but not exact. Just the HU shutting off at random or rebooting for no reason seems common.

Keep taking it back. It's a headache but its only one of 2 things causing it.

    1. Bad hardware. Which they replace.
    2. Bad Software patches, which the fix, or replace the HU.

You'd be shocked how bad software 'upgrades' can really be at times.

I guess so, but that's something I'd like to avoid. I'm busy enough as it is and don't really have time to take off work. I may do the back and forth a few more times, but I'm going to escalate the issue every time.

if its rebooting after a text riddle me this.

how many dam texts do you have stored on your phone? if you have too many, the xfer from the phone to HU will cause it to timeout and cause weird issues.

forgot to add, on my S3 I had this issue a lot, dropped the saved texts down to under 100 across the board and it helped, but after doing a wipe of all text it cleared right up.

on my S5 I haven't run into the issue yet, but ive only had the S5 since about October, so not many texts.

I know you may not think its a software issue, but what entune software do you have? Is it the 3.1 , just making sure the dealership updated you to the latest so we can check that off.

Of course ! a few days ago dropped off my truck to the dealer to get my entune updated, only got the 3.1, and when I called Toyota hq they said 3.2 was still in testing and not officially released! what a joke these clowns are.

I have quite a few currently stored on my phone. Probably less than 100, though. If that is the issue, then that is a fault of the HU for the limitation. I know the HU's aren't super computers, but this shouldn't limit functionality. Making an excuse like that is just that...an excuse for the system freaking out. That is a software fault, likely, and should be addressed in the code.

I'll humor you, though, because I'm curious. I'm going to delete my text history and test your hypothesis even though I have the opinion that it shouldn't matter.

    I'll return with my results!

By the way, I also currently have the S3.

I'll check this as well. Considering it was just a few weeks ago, I'll bet that it's 3.1

well i got the latest i guess u can say latest software it was done mid this year, i told them i had the same problem when i had it on where you can receive text and all it would just power off restart and take literally forever to come back on, i just turned the texting option off in settings and ever since dont have a problem plus its not worth having it on IMO. the only time i turns off and restarts again is when i leave my phone at home and im leaving and the bluetooth is DC when im out but thats probably just once that happend so far. try killing your text option in the settings and see if that works

I had this problem too. I removed bluetooth pairing both on the phone and the radio. Then I paired them again. That solved it for me.

As a follow-up, I tested the deleting of all my text messages. This worked. When I get a text, it no longer restarts. Also, it's much faster to display the text. Before, it would take about 30 seconds to display a text from the time that I received it on my phone. Now, it's almost instantaneous.

HOWEVER, after a little bit of use, it started not displaying the notification at all. I shut the truck off, had lunch, and then tried again. Still wasn't displaying the notifications. I came back to work and realized I forgot to check the software, so I went back out to the truck. Figured I would give the texting test another shot, too. It then started working again. So...I don't know. It's temperamental for sure.

I couldn't find a version number like some of you have made reference to in here. I found a 2.1 version in the software license but that can't be it...I can't be that far behind. When I go to the Software Update section, this is what it displays.

No, nothing like that. It doesn't list a software version anywhere. Just a series of numbers. But they may have changed the 2014 versions. Anyway, I did some digging and found the TSB for 3.2, which was issued in January. Looks like mine is the latest 3.2 version according to their "codes" in the TSB.

yeah I had issue still with the S3. once I moved up to S5 I haven't had any issues.

    1. you on Verizon
    2. what version android you running?

I know on Verizon, they run a odd version of android on the s3 compared to everyone else

4.4.3 compared to others running 4.4.2.

Verizon jumped from 4.4.1 which was working just fine with entune, until 4.4.3 came out, then the texting issue started with entune.

Yes, I'm on Verizon. I'm on version 4.4.2 right now.

I'm getting an upgrade in June. No idea what I'll be getting yet, though.

I found mine doesn't like MMS (or multi-recipient SMS) messages. If of of those is on the list on the phone (Nexus 5) the message list will not download and the truck will not display new messages. Once I clear the message list all works well until another MMS comes in. Fortunately have never had the restart issue.
