Did I F@$& up?

Guys, I just changed my Oil and after filling up with Moble-1 full Syn, I went to replace the Oil cap and noticed that it said 5w-30. I just put in 5 bottles of 5w-20, so will I be ok if I leave it the way it is or should I change it out for 5w-30? This was completely I F-up and I should know better, but what should I do now? You're ok, but if it were me, I'd drain it and change to 5W-30.....but I know how expensive it is to waste.

 

Yeah you should drain it, it happens.

 

I would leave in there. We are at the end of September and the temperatures are not as hot. Do a search and find out what all these numbers meant. You are OK.

I'd flush it. Even though it's not cheap to replace the oil, it will be a whole lot more expensive to have something go wrong and be replaced. It will be hard telling Toyota that you put 5W-20 in there and expect them to replace what went wrong when the manual calls for 5W-30.

if it were me, I'd drain half of the 5w20 out and add M1 0w40. Save the drained 5w20 for your next change and mix it again with 0w40.

btw, the M1 0w40 is an excellent oil, one of the best that mobil makes outside of their racing stuff. It mixes fine with thinner viscosities.

 

colder climates use 5w or 0w. the second number represents viscosity at operating temps, which is independent of outside temperature. the 5w20 is much thinner once heated than 5w30. At 100*c, the vis. is 8.8 vs. 11.3, which IS significant.

 

My dealer put 5W20 in my 2010 Taco that I bought new a month ago.They put a sticker on the top right inside of my windshield stating this.

^^^where are you guys getting your info. from??? the motor reaches the SAME operating temperature, whether 0* or 100* outside.

 

no biggie i used to run 0w-30 amsoil in my 07 prerunner..

 

thats still a 30 weight oil when heated, which is fine. plus Amsoil is a different animal all together.

 

i run 10w-30

 

Hey guys thanks for the help! I will drain it and put in the right stuff, just to be on the safe side. I am lucky, because my wife’s van (2006 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.8 V6) uses 5W-20 so it won’t be wasted. Thank you to all that replied, you guys are a great group to be involved with.

Not with a modern thermostat and cooling system. Especially in the instance that electric fans are used.

Achieving operating temperature takes a longer period of time, although the final operating temperature (coolant) and oil temperature are nearly identical under like driving conditions. There is although an exception, sub-zero temperatures would be them.

If you are running a fully synthetic oil, accidentally using 0-30 instead of 5-30 would not be an issue, although there is a significant difference in viscosity from a 30 weight to a 20 weight oil.
