Toyota needs to make their version of Fords SVT Raptor...

I have reading a lot of about Fords new truck and this thing looks pretty cool, too bad it is a ford. I wish toyota would step outside of the box on occasion, why are they always so conservative?

 

Yeah, the Raptor is nice, but starting at $38k?? I'll take a Tacoma any day!

 

Well it is bigger with more power and capability. To be 10 grand more is not too far out of line.

 

I heard those raptors have bad shifting problems with the auto.

 

It does look awesome...but $38k+ can get you a LOT of vehicle. Even though I just purchased my first Tacoma and plan to drive it for many years to come, Im excited to see what Toyota does with it in the future.

 

How do you know that they aren't? It's called Toyota Racing DEVELOPment for a reason.

 

^ toyota isnt doing snot...just like the b.s. they played with the new supra. Honestly honda has a more exciting "sports" lineup than toyota. Sad but true. They're playing it safe as can be. I was interested in getting the raptor initially but I didnt want to risk getting the first year model. Not too mention that i wanted to see that 6.0L 400hp 400tq boss engine version coming out. The SVT team said that they left so much left in the motor it wasn't even funny. They said some headers, intake , tune and a cam the "boss" will do 600hp/tq no sweat reliably....thats serious bizness

 

So you wanted to get a Ford Raptor, You toot Ford's horn but you don't have the confidence in Ford to buy one now. Interesting....

There is more money to be made by selling huge volumes of cars/trucks that appeal to lots of people than selling low-volume niche vehicles to enthusiasts.

 

That would be an interesting idea but I'd like to see a side by side comparison of a Tacoma and the Raptor. Sure, the Raptor has more power but it's way heavier. In a review I read ( http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,548721,00.html ), they seemed to think there isn't enough power. I also find it interesting how the Raptor has a lower tow rating.

Yup, sounds logical to me. "Honda has a more exciting sports lineup..."? Exactly what truck does Honda sell (if you say the Skirtline, you must turn in your man card immediately), let alone a "sporty" version of said truck?

 

I am sure they do have shifting problems, but so does the toyota, they are Fords after all. It is a damn good idea though on fords part. They are coming out with a 6.2 liter later this year that has 400 hp. Now that is a truck. It only took a company what 15 years to figure out what people want. now toyota needs to follow, make TRD actually mean something other than yellow shocks.
I think a different suspension system with longer travel and some nice flared OEM fenders would do a truck like the tacoma well. Afterall not everyone wants a truck as rough on the edges as a true long travel setup. I hope the program does well for ford, but I doubt it will in this economy. If they had the idea about 10 years ago it would have changed the industry and done major damage to the aftermarket

 

I'd pit my taco with the engage kit, costing way less than $38K altogether, against any SVT Raptor any day

 

you guys are comparing apples to oranges. If you want to compare the raptor to another truck, compare it to the Tundra which costs just as much as the Raptor. To be honest I love Tundra, but this Raptor would definately get my strong consideration if I were getting a full size. About the reliablity of Ford, I would just make them throw in an extended warranty to 100,000 miles. I believe the Power train is warranties for 100,000 anyways.

You all have to admit that a stock truck pulling 14 inches of travel with 400hp is fucking impressive, even if it isn't a toyota. There is no bigger fan of toyotas than me either.

 

Comparing the Raptor to ANY truck is stupid. There's no truck to compare it with. Probably underpowered right now with the 5.4L but it's getting a 400hp motor for next year. But at 38k I think it's a bargain for what you get. How many other trucks can go 100mph off road with the kind of suspension travel it has. Nothing. And considering a normal F150 FX4 is in the mid 30's the fact the Raptor starts at 38k isn't bad at all. As far as towing goes, who cares if it has a lower rating. People aren't buying this truck for normal truck duties. It's obviously a very niche type of vehicle.

 

I'll say that if you give me a 30K 4x4 DC TRD OR and another 8K for the suspension, I could out-do the Raptor any day of the week.

 

I wonder if this is really true? It would make a great magazine article! They probably wouldn't use a Tacoma as "the other truck" though.

 

take a base F150 and spend the remaining price difference on mods...does the raptor really get 14" of travel stock with 4x4? God, I bet the front CV axles arent covered in the warranty.

 

Just drop the same Raptor motor in a Tacoma, and go long travel...

 

There are nice concepts with the Raptor, such as the aux switch box and the Fox suspension, but this truck is for someone who wants an "offroad" truck straight from the factory. It still looks like the inside floor has carpet...and leather seats? C'mon... fold-out step on the tailgate? Nope.
