Undercoating with Fluid Film?

I am not sure if this is the right forum to post this in but i am planning on spraying my 2015 with this stuff as soon as it arrives:

Any thoughts? Tips/Tricks for getting into body panels like the inner bed panels?

I heard to mix in 1/4 chain saw bar oil to make it stick better. I bought a gallon kit and air gun. I am wondering how to get into the back or the body pannels, doors, wheel wells, etc.

 

Done and without chain saw oil.

 

Any tricks to get in the bed fenders? How long have you been spraying it? Since new? How snowy/salty is it in your area? Holding up in the wheel wells? I am afraid the wash area will wash it away quickly.

 

Because I have never seen rusted fenders on a 2nd gen. I don't bother. Things like rear brake backing plates, frames, inside of the rear bumper, bolts I may need to remove one day stuff like that. Maine is right behind NH as the winner in the north east salt race my frame is still black after 50K plus miles and 4 winters. It does not wash off unless you really try with a pressure washer.

 

Do you apply once per year?

 

I believe Krown is a similar type of product and they actually drilled small holes in the doors to coat the interior panels of my truck. They place a small rubber plug afterwards and it looks clean as can be.

I had a old SR5 pickup and every where they drilled the holes in the door etc that's where they rotted out!

 

Fluid film works great, yeah I'd never let some one put holes in places where there weren't hiles to begin with, just like above that's where it will start rusting and rotting from inside out....no thanks... Op you won't need to add any oil to the mix, fluid film will work alone very well and lasts all winter I got a new frame and it's been coated with around four cans... this one Should hold up with treatments every year...

 

The drilled holes were filled with lithium grease and coated with the Krown application. They won't rust. Krown has been around for a long time in some of the worst salt & snow climates there are.

I used a pneumatic undercoating gun to apply it under my 15. Did everything underneath that I could get too. I figure that applying it is already better than doing nothing. At least the major parts are coated. After this winter I will wash the truck real good and then inspect it for rust. When I reapply this next summer I will make sure I look for any places that show any rust. But for now the majority of the frame and cross members have a coating and that should be enough for the first winter.

 

I sprayed my snowmobile yesterday. I will be spraying the truck when it arrives hopefully next week. Waiting 8 weeks from order date...

 

It's a great product, right up there with wd40 for cleaning car and boat stuff. I've been using it on the underside of my vehicles for years and it lasts a lonnnggg time. Lots of salt and crappy weather here on the pacific coast.

 

I learned about this product from this site, am thankful and wish i knew about it years ago. About a month ago i called the company and asked if i could brush it on and they said yes. As folks have mentioned, its the viscosity of paint...so after stirring and pouring it off into a paint pot, brushed it on with a 3" paint brush. I used about a third of a gallon, undercoat and inside tailgate and a faded plastic bumper on another car. The good thing about using a brush, is i could control exactly where i was applying it. Ofcourse the thickness and coverage will vary much more than spraying though and was more time consuming.

 

If you are going to continue using FF just go buy a cheap Wagner paint sprayer they are like $70 by the time you do the frame a couple of times you have paid for the sprayer in time and quality. You could put the FF on with a rag but you can't get to places you can with a fine mist from a sprayer. I have been using this stuff for years on farm machinery and vehicles I don't clean the sprayer because the FF does not have any solvents in it just put it on the shelf and fill it the following year.

 

Thanks, thats a good idea, not having to clean sprayer out. I actually didnt clean the brush, it will be a designated fluid film brush and i put extra material in a plastic jar w lid, will use that for hinges, battery terminals etc. i have told alot of folks about this stuff for boat trailers, outboard engines, boats, cars, snowblowers and lawnmowers and nobody has heard of it.
