How much weight are you putting in bed for snow

    How much depends on where you place it. Two 50lb sand bags over the axle is 100 lbs. Two 50lb sand bags against the tailgate is effectively heavier. The same two bags against the cab are less effective. Cut a truck tire tube in half, fill the halves with dry sand and gravel (maybe even add some rock salt), wire them shut, and put them against the tailgate. If you need traction sand to get the Taco off an icy boat ramp or glazed parking spot you have it. Of course if you are asking now it may already be too late to find dry aggregate :)

    Pretty simple. Pick a snow covered road with a significant hill. Empty your truck bed out. See how far up the hill you get, maybe even record the odometer reading to see how much wheel.spin happens. Try it again with 200lbs in the bed over the rear axle. Compare results. Use winter tires in both tests. Can't get the wheels.to.spin in the empty test? Stop halfway up the hill, and try starting again from a stand still. Compare results.

    Too much weight behind the axle can make the truck difficult to handle in a slide
    Backend will.have more inertia, and want to pass the front of the truck. Best is to be more balanced in weight distribution.

    For Oz he can do the test on a downhill. See if he stops before the truck goes off the ferry dock. To make it interesting, wait for the ferry to leave first. Oh wait, he would need snow or ice on the road. That only happens once or twice a year for him

    I'm sure Pete has seen plenty of experience on different kinds of snow, and when he does get snow at home, it's the worst slippery wet shit type of snow there is.

    Your physics are correct but putting the sandbags against the tailgate acts as a lever and reduces the weight over the steer tires. It's safer to put the sandbags directly over the rear axle so it doesn't take traction away from the front tires.
