Since the 4 cyl makes peak hp n torque at such high rpm's......would putting in lower gears be beneficial for both power and some economy ? Its obvious you wouldn't want to cruise the highway at peak torque rpm's (4000rpm) , but instead of like 2000-2200 what about like 2800 or so ? What about if you have a 4 cyl n 33" tires....like 4.56's or 4.88's.....since they have overdrive.......just thinking....... musing...... contemplating......

    Welcome to TW, Mike.

While lower gears can't lower the stock 2.7's torque peak of 3,800 rpms, however, it can make it feel like that as the 3,800 peak is reached at a lower speed. It's a great way to compensate for larger diameter wheels which raise the gearing. If you like to drive off-road on large tires, low gearing is exactly what you need

My Taco never sees dirt and has really high 3:31 road gears, so I modified my 2.7 so that it hits its torque peak at 2,800 rpms instead of 3,800 rpms.

I just did a little calculating, and on my truck the factory stock torque peak is reached at 114 mph in 5th gear, which is right at the speed limiter cut off of 115 mph. With the mods, the peak is reached at 84 mph in 5th gear.

My 4cyl has 33" tires and 4.88 gears.
About 2200 rpm in 5th gear will but you at about 60mph
