    I just took ownership of a new home. Well, built in 1860-ish new. The previous owner installed a Tarm Solo Plus 40 in a shed out back for secondary heat. Im still learning how to manage it. Been heating the last week with wood. With the warmer temps lately I can keep the house at 72 for about 10 hrs per stoke. Anyone else have any experience with gasification type burners? Pics will follow. I am also looking for a better set-up for the mixing/tempering valve on the back of the burner. The current set-up, done by the previous owner is too unstable and allows for too much movement of pipes from expansion/contraction of flex pipe under the ground. So comments/ideas on pics would be appreciated.

    I'm thinking he's dividing by the 12 months in a year rather than the 6-7 months of heating season.
    Personally, I usually divide by the amount of time I'm actually running the stove for, rather than the full year.

    Edit-
    Of course, by my method it costs me $66 a month for heat burning wood...
    If I use his method it only costs me $33 a month. I may have to change my method

    Spending the day taking care of (more like babysitting) BIL's wood burner. Definitely prefer to burn pellets:D As long as the hopper is full there is fire. I only open the door once a day to knock the ash into the bucket. :thumbsup:

    We multiply by 12 then divide by 52 to get the weekly cost. Heat is $15.5/$16 a week. Way less than to heat with LP at normal prices. Not bad at all when the cost of LP spikes to $4-5+ a gallon.:D

    My uncle brought up one of these for the stove during hunting season this year. Was pretty neat. Anyone else ever use one?

    Of course! Don't you?

    J/K that formula is for budgeting purposes. In the summer electrical use goes up because of AC use, but we budget for the avg. electrical use. All bills are done in a similiar manner. Bills get paid and we don't have "money fights":)

    Makes sense

    My cost for heating my home is $0

    Try that on for size pellet heads

    So your time is worth nothing? Your chainsaw was free? Your storage was built by Amish working for free? ect.

    Good for you. I don't. And I still have to put gas/oil mix in my chainsaw. And storing wood for a year is also not my idea of fun.
    Starage=Storage everybody knows that:rolleyes:

    It doesn’t take a lot of gas to cut wood as long as you have a good saw and a sharp chain I can probably do 4 cords with 2 ½ gallons. Good saws no big box junk, a saw from a chain saw dealer will last at least 10 years with no problems and start when you need it. Dry wood up here is going for $400 if you can find any. If I needed to pay for a new saw I could just sell a cord of wood. There is something to cutting your own wood way beyond just a stack of wood. The cost is minimal the rewards are huge. My total cost for a years’ worth of wood is very small even if I figured the saw cost it would be less than $60 a year. I used to sell fire wood so I guess it’s safe to say that I am so far ahead that my fuel costs are going to be zilth for the rest of my wood burning years. Even when I was working I cut in my free time free being the magic word so yeah until I can’t lift a saw any more my costs are nil for wood heat.
