 I hate you...you got swan pics and I didn't :pout:

I SAW some swans but couldn't get any pics. Had a flock of about 20 or so fly right over me today but there was nowhere for me to pull over and I lost track of them. Saw a few more later on but they were too far away. I wouldn't be surprised if they're gone soon...all of the lakes that they would normally hang out on have frozen solid in the last week. Usually it takes until mid December for the lakes to really freeze up!

I did see a couple dozen hawks and eagles today, they were all perched on fences and utility poles just keeping an eye on the fields

Help me ID these guys. These are the birds that have been hanging in my neighborhood since the cold snap hit. I can't figure out what they are and can't recall seeing them before. I wonder if they got lost on their migration?
Sorry for the crappy pics -I was shooting with my tele out my front window....directly at my neighbors houses, didn't want to seem too creepy
They're about the size of a robin as best I can tell, hard to judge since they're all poofy in the cold, their backs/wings are really dark brown almost black, and their breasts are dark brown with off white tips to the feathers. They seem to like the neighbor's crab apple tree, not sure if thats because its what they would normally eat or because its the only available food in the neighborhood.

Starlings as best I can tell, with winter spots. Mostly all black in summer.

I agree with the starling ID - I don't think I've seen them around here before, they are apparently all over MT though :notsure:

Nice shots, Lisa and Mike! Crazy about seeing all the coots!

Fun fact about European Starlings, the white feather tips are part of their winter plumage after they go through a full molt. Then the tips wear off over the winter and leave them with the bright iridescence like in Ben's picture from a little while ago. Weird that they don't actually go through a full molt when they go into breeding plumage!

Went to Joshua Tree this last weekend and added two new species to my list. The cactus wrens were freaking everywhere, it was crazy! They definitely love foraging around for food left by messy campers! Also got a few Gambel's Quail, Western Scrub-Jays, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and Rock Wrens. Oh and quite a few Common Ravens as well. Not too active, but a fun trip!

I take it that's not in bear country? Certainly would not fly up here. In fact stuff like that is why I avoid campgrounds anymore

Haha, yeah definitely not bear country. The coyotes were pretty good at getting in food, too, though. I don't know why they don't have more awareness things around the campgrounds there to get people to not leave food and stuff out. My buddy lost his tortillas to the coyotes after they opened up his cooler! Gotta keep things buttoned down.

The eagles in AK can be crazy! In Homer, AK there used to be a lady - Jean Keene - who fed the eagles in the winter and there would be hundreds there some days. An amazing sight. Feeding eagles is illegal but they let her do it because she started the tradition back in like the 70's and there was no one around to tell her not to. After she died a few years ago the state took over feeding the birds and fed them a little less each year, trying to ween them off of being dependent on humans and trying to get them to go back to their normal winter hunting habits. They were afraid that if they just stopped feeding one day they'd all starve.

    Benjamin got a job?!?!

I have never seen as many eagles as I did in Alaska. Man, if you haven't been-you have to go. We did a bicycle trip from Anchorage to Fairbanks and back down to Valdez-I would do that again in a heart beat.

Red-tail! Face does look like Swainson's but the dark patagial mark (on the leading edge of the wing, between the body and the first bend, the wrist) is indicative of a red-tailed hawk.
    Ferruginous has red pants :p

Nice shots, Marc! That new setup of yours is quite amazing.

 That's a heavy nest! I wonder if it'll work out and the osprey will continue to use it in the new location.

Hmmm...forgot about those! I'll have to see when the ones in San Diego are. I'm on my way to ecuador right now and will be there until the 20th, so we'll see!
