From what my research was able to dig up, the OEM fuel pump for the 2005+ Tacoma 4.0L trucks is a Delphi unit that's rated at 190lph. It's a different (smaller) unit for the 2.7L trucks.

The stock injectors flow at 320cc and the TRD 'High Flow' fuel injectors flow at 455cc. Using Deatsch Werks (one of the 2 pumps available in the URD kit) online fuel pump calculator we arrive at a minimum flow rate of 164lph for a fuel pump to be able to supply proper fuel to six 455cc injectors.

So according to Deatsch Werks' own calculator you don't need more than 164lph to supply our injectors. This means that even at full static (100% injector duty cycle) our stock fuel pump still supplies roughly 15% more fuel volume than is required to run six TRD high flow fuel injectors to their 100% maximum. Plenty of headroom there to run more boost than lots of people run with aftermarket pulleys. If you're going much smaller than a stealth you'll want a wideband O2 sensor as you start to get closer to running on the edge and will want to know if you're being safe and will also need some sort of engine/fuel management to tune your system properly. That last sentence is my opinion *(therefore full debatable) and it really wouldn't be a bad idea to at least have a wideband sooner than that but IMO the Stealth pulley is as small as you'd want to go before being able to monitor and verify your a/f ratio.

Finally, to debunk the theory that you need an external fuel filter to change: Today's cars that don't have an external fuel filter to change are designed to not need to be changed. North America has very clean fuel so engineers set out to find a more efficient fuel system and determined that that previous external fuel filters actually filtered to too small of a level for our fuel systems & fuel. Filtering out stuff that doesn't need to be filtered out means that the filter will become clogged sooner & will require changing to keep flow rates from being decreased. The new fuel filters have MUCH more surface area and don't filter down to as many microns as traditional external filters and thus don't need to be replaced as often and also don't get 'clogged' the way traditional filters can/do. In other words, the in-tank fuel filters are designed to outlive the pump itself meaning that changing out the whole assembly when the pump fails means you also get a new fuel filter. Summary: as much as some of us who have been turning wrenches for a while feel comfortable with an external fuel filter you can change regularly it's simply not necessary. Telling someone considering a TRD s/c kit (and no other mods) that they NEED a fuel pump upgrade is simply incorrect information and needs to stop.

I know lots of people who wanted to debate me used a lot of emotion and feelings in their reasoning to debate what they felt was an opinion. The point is it's not an opinion I have... it's science & engineering with math involved and exact figures. It's not guestimates and feelers and overspending so you 'feel' more secure about driving around.

On past forums I've been on there's been an exact map of the items (with options from different manufacturers within that segment) you need at various stages and it was understood that that map was to be followed if you wanted to match up your components properly and avoid pushing other components too far or spending money you didn't have to spend to do mods that weren't doing you any good. This is the exact sort of thread where this sort of technical discussion can take place for something like this to start to take shape. As long as people who are clueless to the science behind this & don't have anything to contribute don't come along pounding their chests and personally attacking people who challenge what they thought was right because they're scared of being wrong. Technical conversations like this have no place for personal attacks, meme's, childishness and feelers being hurt. Otherwise the thread goes off-track & the community doesn't benefit from them.

Please note that I have NO dog in the fight and have attacked nobody personally with that post. If you respond with some sort of childish personal attack then it's you who is the problem, not me.

It can if you don't tune it properly. If he's getting engine knock under load (uphill) then his maps are too lean and running on the ragged edge to where if he gets some bad fuel, colder air or uphill pulls he's going to get pre-detonation. So it's a function of the tune and not the calibrator itself. When you start getting into engine/fuel management you can't afford to be lazy the way you can with stock tunes because you can screw things up a lot quicker. This is why the stock tune (and even factory s/c flash) run so rich because it's to take into account all the things I mentioned above to try to protect the lowest common denominator among us who don't understand how those things can affect a ragged edge tune.

I live very close to sea level and the way to the airport has some major elevation changes, combined with 100 degree weather roughly.

Pinging will be caused by bad timing more than bad fueling. It's hard to fix high load/low rpm pings with a custom tune, and nearly impossible to expect a universal tune to.

OOo...if you were experiencing pinging at high rpm/high load that just shows the tune in the maf cal wasn't optimal. But like mentioned, bad timing will have a bigger effect than bad fueling especially with the signs of pinging presenting.

And that's the thing about the tunes that are sent out. Just because it works for one person doesn't mean itll work for others. So many factors like temps, elevation, ect. Come into play. That's why it's a good idea to go ahead and further adjust the maps sent out by urd, if you have the access/capability.

Will be curious to see the map you received with the MAF. The MAF should not affect the CL part and normaly the OL part is conservative.
