MacBook Air or HDTV?

Random question but my wife said I could get one or the other as a Christmas gift and I am torn to which to get. I currently have a 42" led tv in the living room that is 4 years old. I also have a 2009 white macbook but both are showing their age. Which would benefit you in more ways than not and which would you choose? I'd like some input.

 

Macbook.... hdtv will be out of date before the end of the year, macbook will be good for years.

Personally I'd go for the macbook. I have the iMac desktop and it's so nice. It's about 6-7 years old and it's still running strong. The led tv you have should last for quite some time.

 

Ok, if the hdtv is 4k you have a point.... still....

 

Which one do you use more?

 

There is no way all content will be delivered in 4K by the end of 2015 , or even most content

 

4k tvs upconvert so currently that is the main benefit.

 

Price difference would need to come way down to make non 4K tv's out of date

Well , I would not be upset by a sharp price reduction by the time I'm ready to replace my current XBR9

 

Sony does make the best 4k tv but you are going to pay for it.

 

I admit I have based my price differences on the Sony 4K offerings , that may not reflect the costs of other 4K units

 

My phone's resolution is higher than 1080p (an LG G3). Somewhere we hit a point where the additional pixels aren't noticeable with a human eye. The screen is beautiful, sure, but I don't know if anyone could really notice the difference between it and a 1920X1080 screen.

Some time we will hit that point with TVs as well.

 

4K really shines in larger tv's like 55" +

 

It certainly does, but If you take that resolution and double it will we be able to see the difference there? There's a stopping point somewhere, then something other than resolution will be focused on.

I think phones are hitting that point (or will be soon), it's a question of when TVs will.

Video is only half of it, too. If you don't have a good sound system, build that up. Not with the home theater in a box nonsense either.

 

I have a 5.1 set up with a Sony ES receiver and Klipsch speakers and sub

 

Klipsch makes good stuff. I have their 2.1 set on my desk at work since I didn't have room for a receiver and speakers and for what it is, it's astounding.

I have an Onkyo 5.1 receiver with Polk speakers and a sub.

 

There is a price difference, I would probably use both equally; as I use them around the same amount. I think my wife and visitors will benefit from the tv more than a personal macbook. But I'm all for the apple ecosystem as I have an iPhone 6 currently. I am honestly torn; but the wife said only 1. I know, first world problems...

 

My dad has always been a Sony man. We had a 19" color tv and a Betamax in the late 70s when I was growing up. Unfortunately, we live in a throw away society and quality has really dropped. He has a Sony at his apartment but a Sharp at his house.
