I dont really watch that much TV, my 720p 32" works just fine....it's ~4 years old.

My 3 year old thinkpad does what I need it to do. I mainly just do internet/email bs so this'll be fine for a while longer.

Personally I'd buy guns/ammo or add it to a motorcycle fund.

Technically the human eye can only see 60Hz yet Tv manufacturers push the refresh rate up to smooth out motion issues with larger displays. The same applies to resolution.

I thought it was 72 hz.

I can see old CRT monitors flashing while they refresh when they're set at 60 hz. Very hard on the eyes. 72 hz and above were always smooth, and I believe that's why the 72 hz setting existed.

Actually it seems the brain can interpret more fps than 60. But if a monitor is 60Hz than that is as much as you'll see. The manufacturers would increase the refresh rate on old crt monitors to reduce the screen flicker.

Get the macbook, but get the pro and not the air.
Like stated by others, TV prices will go down. Plus, if your current TV breaks, you'll get another one anyway assuming the wife watches it also.

I vote Macbook Air. Go for the 8GB of RAM first. I would then go i7 and then memory. There's a lot of cloud storage options for memory and why it would be last on my list. If you can, max out the Air w/ 8GB, i7, and 520 gigs of memory.

TVs will drop in price for the Super Bowl. Your wife will have forgotten about Christmas by then and you can talk her into the new TV. Plus as you stated, she'll benefit from the TV and will be more likely to go for it rather than vice versa. :)
