Haven't posted any updates lately because we were continuing to have fuel system issues with this truck. After looking at how bad the fuel filter coming out of the tank looked, we dropped the tank and found that it was pretty much shot. Finding that replacement tanks aren't being made for the 83 anymore, we decided to convert the truck to run on propane.

The tank, fuel pump, fuel lines, regulator, and fuel lines were all ripped out of the truck. Then, in went a new propane kit from GotPropane.com. The kit consists of new propane fuel lines, filter, cutoff solenoid, air filter, vaporizer, and a propane mixer. We had some initial trouble with figuring out how best to mount the vaporizer, but ended up making a simple bracket out of flat stock steel from Lowes. After that, radiator hoses were plumbed into the vaporizer and all lines hooked up. We mounted a 10 gallon forklift tank in the bed. Took a while to prime the system for the first crank up but its been running great ever since.

It went on its inaugural wheeling trip this weekend at Uwharrie and ran like a champion. No more flooding out on hills from the stupid weber or gas pressure drops from the bad gas tank. Next up we are looking at possibly some 4.70 gears for the T-Case after we fix a minor power steering leak.

Here is a pic of the engine bay with everything installed (minus the air filter):

Wish we would have gotten to wheel with it man! We have to plan another trip to gulches soon for sure before the somewhat larger trip to Tellico Johnny and I were talking about!

Yeah man time sort of got away from us there at the end. But the truck is running so much better than ever now. We will never have any fuel related issues again, which has pretty much been our only real issue with this truck since day one. Only problem we are having right now is the idle mixture screw kept wanting to back itself out but we're gonna get that straight soon. Hopefully we will get in another wheeling trip before too long and Jony's shoulder will get better so he can bring along the Honey Badger.

My FJ skid plates took a hell of a beating this weekend. Engine skid got a pretty nice bowl sized dent in it but they held up and did their job. Slider kickout suffered a minor scrape to the paint and that was the sum total of damage from the weekend, so can't complain much.

4.70 case gears are amazing! I love mine. How involved was the propane kit? I've been tossing the idea around of their dual fuel kit for mine. My rig will climb like nobodys business but it wants to die if I'm riding the clutch downhill.

It was not super difficult to install. It took us a lot more time to install then the quoted 6 hours but a lot of that was down to little things. You need a factory carb flange to use the propane only kit so we had to get a used carb off eBay and disassemble it. Also figuring out and fabricating the bracket for the vaporizer took a little bit of time.

We actually were going to put in the dual fuel kit but our entire fuel system was sort of shot. And, on top of that, Cary at GotPropane told us about some folks that had issues getting the dual fuel setup to fit under the hood. We didn't want to clearance the hood or deal with any of that so we ultimately just went with 100 percent propane but our truck isn't a daily driver so it was an easy call.

My buddy runs the dual fuel kit and I don't think he had any issues. Mine's not a daily but I still really enjoy running it around town and whatnot and drive it to the trail off and on too so I wanted the option of running gas as well.
